Hi,

Many thanks to everyone for finding all that info regarding James, he's proving to be a difficult man to find.

The only record I have found him in is the 1851 census living in Doune, Kilmadock aged 12. Are there directories
available for the Kilmadock area ? maybe I could trace his parents David & Mary to see where they ended up in 1861.

Sorry - I just reread your first post and realised you were aware of the death of Mary Gillespie in 1856

Have you tried looking for marriages of his siblings?
post 1855 that will have addresses for the couple, which could give an idea where the family were then.

There seems to be a large family, though as father is in his 70's in 1851 and Mary in her 40's I'd hazard a guess she is a second wife?

Hi Wilma,

Yes, I found a marriage for a Hugh Gillespie on SP in Doune, Kilmadock, in Nov 1861 to Elizabeth McDonald which has a James Gillespie as a witness. The address given was Blackford for Hugh, and Doune for Elizabeth. It stated that Hugh's parents David & Mary McMillan were both deceased. I haven't been able to find a birth for James, apart from one on 27 Oct 1838 in Fort William, Ballachulish.

Yes again, I do have a feeling that David Gillespie was married twice possibly to a Isabella Cowie in 1796 in Alloa, and married Mary McMillan in Achnacairn, Argyll 1823. I am descended from his son William. David died in 1861, but I can't find anything regarding his parents, William or mother Mary Cowie.
