1921 Census

Post by Falkyrn » Thu Jun 17, 2021 2:53 pm

As many suspected the Covid Lockdowns have had a disastrous effect on the Census digitisation and we can't expect the 1921 Census until the latter part of 2022. (article from Scottish Genes by Chris Paton )

My daughter had noticed this hidden away in the guides section of SP just this morning:

We will release indexed images of the 1921 Scottish Census on scotlandspeople.gov.uk and in the ScotlandsPeople Centre in the latter half of 2022. We’ll keep you updated on progress via our digital channels.

If they need some volunteers to help speed things up - they only have to ask!

That's disappointing. The 100 year closure period finishes in the next few days. I was expecting to have a whole new lot of information to rummage around in. Alas we will all have to wait.

All the best,

Definitely disappointing, to put it mildly. But I guess they have only had 100 years to plan for this , so give them some more time. Maybe the folks at Free Cen can help out. I like Wilma's suggestion about volunteer help. Since we all work at home anyway Covid wont keep us back!

Actually they haven't had a 100 years to plan for this. The internet wasn't around a 100 years ago.

Thanks jgmills for your comment. The intent of my facetious comment about 100 years was to say that everybody, including Scotlands People, knew that after 100 years the census can be made public, so they had plenty of time to plan .I did not mention the internet , which has been around considerably less, but still has been around for a fair amount of time. SP managed to produce the 7 censuses (censi?) 41-01 in a relatively short one or two year period, and the 1911 census pretty much on time

I have difficulty accepting the Covid 19 as a valid excuse. There are companies and others over the world who use the internet widely and are actually doing better than before, because of that. Think of Amazon and many others.

I am sorry my abbreviated comments were not clearer.

I still like the idea of the Free Cen option. Maybe we should all start calling our MPs to put pressure on SP, and try to get some action. I would , but to my eternal regret I no longer live in Scotland.

In SP's defence, they (NRS - the National Records of Scotland) had possibly planned a release around now before Covid came along. For the duration of Covid, they will have had many of their staff furloughed or working from home. This staff working, whether at home or in the office have had much of their time diverted onto producing many of the Government Covid statistics that we have seen issued in the news for the duration of the pandemic.

So, disappointed or not, we shall be avidly awaiting the estimated date of the latter half of 2022 for the release of the 1921 Census online.

All the best,

AndrewP

So disappointing. I was really looking forward to getting back into everything. I'll need to go looking for more sideways branches! :(
