This is my first posting to talking scots, I would like to know if anyone could help me with the 1871 census.

Hi Annette,

Many thanks for the census information, this is very useful. I would be very grateful if you could post the poorhouse information either here or by email to ICOLFER@aol.com .
Since I last posted I found the birth of Robert Lee jnr 22nd Dec 1876 and died 13 Aug 1881. The ages on the 1881 Census are way out.

Regards,

Irene Maria

Hi Annette,
I see what you mean about informative :D I recognise his genes in some of his descendants
The details of Isabella vary. In the 1881 Census she is listed as being born in Dundee, in the 1871, Lanark and on the poorhouse application, Edinburgh. No wonder I have never been able to find her birth :) Her parents marriage appears on the IGI in Dundee but is not listed on the OPR on SP.
I didn't know that William Scroggie had deserted Isabella Lee but knew from Charles Lee's death certificate that he was in the Rifle Brigade and had enlisted under the name of John McCombe for some reason.
Thank you again for your help, each piece of information puts flesh to my family tree.

Regards,

Irene

Hi Annette,
I have ben looking through the data I have for this daughter and found that although the poorhouse application lists William Scroggie as having deserted his wife, they are listed together on the 1901 Census.
What does the poorhouse application mean when it says she is in house?

Irene Maria

Hello Irene,

I was just about to post a message about that very thing when I saw yours!

I was going to say do not take that kind of info as 100% as sometimes our ancestors told 'little white lies' to get the help they wanted. We call them 'scammers' in Glasgow today!
I think all the family's circumstances were taken in to account when the parish gave help.

I've seen stories of families living in America and parents not having seen their children for years but in actual fact I have records of them living round the corner at the time.

Regards,
Annette m

I'm not sure what Robert meant when he talked about Isabella being in
the house with mother and children (I transcribed it the way it was written).
I can only assume that he meant Isabella and her children were also living at his home address with Isabella snr.
