Hello Mary

Sorry about this. I thought I had saved a private post so that I could look up my tree etc and then when I went to get back to you, I couldn't find my way in! Have no idea how to work that "inbox, savedbox etc". Same as I wanted to adjust my username a bit but in my profile area I seem to be able to change everything else but that. Don't worry any site organisers reading this - I know it's me. (The IT Crowd, Channel 4 on a Friday makes me laugh and writhe at the same time. "Is it switched on - AT THE WALL". Oh, yes, I remember it well!.)

Never mind - glad you got back to me. Not that I have any very swinging news. Our Margaret Crosgrove was born in Girvan ca. 1844 to David Crossgrove, weaver, and Maria ms Broadley or Aitken (!) but mainly Aitken and died 23 Jan 1903 in Maybole. Parents were both from Ireland, don't know where. The family moved to Crosshill, Ayrshire where father continued weaving, certainly for a spell , but when he died he was the Church Officer.

Margaret had an illegitimate son called David, who stayed on with Granny in Crosshill when his Mum married William Brackenridge and moved to Maybole. Did you know that in the late 1800s Maybole must have been chock a block with shoemakers? In his mid twenties David went to live with her when Granny died and Margaret's husband died.

Margaret's brother Thomas is our Crosgrove connection. He gave up helping with the weaving and moved to Glasgow where he and his wife became Grocers and Wine and Spirit Merchants in Rose Street (Florence St) Gorbals. I haven't worked out yet how they managed that since they were not exactly loaded - he had been a slater's labourer and she had been in domestic service. However, the family business lasted for almost 100 years.

Well, this doesn't help you much Mary. I think David Crossgrove, weaver, could of course have had other siblings who moved from Ireland to Glasgow. . . . .

Our Crosgroves lived happily ever after on the south side of Glasgow, except for one who landed up in Sorbie Wigtownshire.

Didn't mean to write a book. Sorry not to be more help.

Regards

Lorna

Hi Lorna - sorry there is no connection. Mines are from Co Down, and moved to Glasgow sometime after 1858, I have yet to find them on a census

My gt granny moved to Greenock sometime after the 1881 census, and she had 2 brothers John and James, so far I have only found one of their births, but have managed to locate them on the 1881 census, both their parents having died by then,

I tried looking for the letter I received from Stuart Cosgrove, can't find it. I wrote to him c/o the BBC in Glasgow, and in turn he passed the letter onto his sister, who was researching the family history. I am sure his family of Cosgrove's were originally from Ayrshire

Thanks Jack

Mary C(r)osgrove born 1858 2 bro's born James/John. Have a birth cert for James who was born 14th sept 1862 Hutchesontown Glasgow.

I found mary on the 1881 census (Co Down Ireland)
Found John 1881 census, listed as stepson to the below Rosie
Found James 1881 census - in HMP (prison)

Mary was born 1858 Ireland, so assume the family came to Scotland sometime after that, if James was born 1862 in Glasgow

parents

James C(r)osgrove
Ann C(rosgrove) nee McGuire

James (father)died 1874, have his death cert details (from a paid genealogist) as well as for Ann. James (father) lived with or married a Rose/Rosie Short after Ann's death
Black Isle - Beaton Bethune Campbell
Inverness - Mackintosh
Aberdeen - Mitchell Leslie
Ireland - Cosgrove McGuire

Hi Mary,
Looks like you're out of luck for 1861 :(
The nearest family is this (all b Ireland), but mother isn't Ann.
--
James Cosgrove 30
Elizabeth 25
Mary 3
Edward 28
--
So unless in another County, it doesn't look like they were yet in Scotland.
It was a slim chance i know, but sorry to disappoint you.
I ended up searching for wee Mary with Ma*, C*, age 3yrs +/- 2yrs, born anywhere,
but still the only suitable in name was the above one.
Jack

Thanks Jack. That's great. Some more distant cousins hanging about out there.

Sorry not to be able to help Mary. Will try out Stuart Cosgrove.

Regards

Just joined Talking Scot. Seems like a great site.
Did a search on the forum for "Broadley" and came across your posting.
I have been researching my lineage and already have 30 Broadley individuals. As well some of the children have gone on to be called Bradley -dropping the "o". I was wondering if there were any connections. Almost to a last one, they are born in Lanark; Glasgow, Ayr, Milton, Govan, Partick.
