Wherefore art thou Tirzah in 1901? .....

Post by joette » Wed May 17, 2006 3:45 pm

Found an unusually named Grandaughter for my GGGGreat-Grandmother.
Tirzah Walker Brown born Lanark Jan.1870
James Brown-Father & Mary Walker Mother.
She marries Thomas Adam Hamilton in Lanark 1892 & she dies in Dunfermline in 1955 aged 83-Tirzah on the Death Certificate signed by her son James Brown Hamilton.
Thought with such an unusual first name she would be easy to spot on the Census but no luck with her at all.Found Tina & Theresa but they are not her & tried her under Brown in case she was using her maiden name but no joy.I
I've used Wildcards & soundex & any combination I could think off.Anybody any clues?
If anybody has any connection to this unusually named ancestor I would love to share my knowledge of this part of my family.

Hi Joette
I've come across a Tirzah before - Tirzah Ravilious, wife of Eric. She was a wood engraver & artist.
http://www.ericravilious.co.uk/

I believe the name usually denotes a third daughter or child but not always!

Best wishes
Lesley

Yes she was the third daughter.I knew it was a biblical city but hadn't realised the signifigance of three.
Some lovely paintings in the collection & I suppose my Tirzah was a bit of an artist too as she was a handloom weaver.

There may have been another Tirzah before this one. Seems this one was born 5 MAY 1871 (so after 1871 census) Stonehouse, Lanark, Scotland 15 months after the one you listed. If you can't find her in the 1871 census I suspect the first one died as a baby and the second was a BUMP in the TUM by the 1871 census.

TIRZAH WALKER BROWN
Female

Event(s):
Birth:
05 MAY 1871 Stonehouse, Lanark, Scotland
Christening:
Death:
Burial:

Parents:
Father: JAMES BROWN Family
Mother: MARY WALKER

So Firzah Hamilton age 29 is looking VERY good.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Thanks for that Pink Shoes & Andy.
Never thought of looking under Firzah although it looks like a misindexing as it clearly is Tirzah on the entry.
I had seen both entries on the IGI but just thought they had waited a few months to have her Christened. The first Tirzah only lived for an hour & died of "debility" which I am presuming was prematurity. How sad.
You don't expect to come across too many Tirzah Walker Brown's but I suppose they wanted to replace what they had lost.
The Brother on the 1881 Census with them ended up so I am led to believe from Ancestry as a missionary somewhere in Africa. They seem to have been quite a religious lot so not too surprised.

My great grandmother was Tirzah Brown Hamilton who died in 1955.
Her son James Brown Hamilton was my grandfather who died in 1973 and the family along with my mother are buried in Dunfermline Cemetery .
