Hi
I'm a bit puzzled here by some people who don't appear on the SP version of the census in Aberdeen in 1841.
On Freecen in St Clements Aberdeen there is a family I was looking for given as John Grollenwell aged 55 Seaman born abroad and his wife Christian born in county and their children Christian, Ann and Isabella. I believe the family name to be Grothenwell.
Wishing to see the image I searched for them on SP under every possible wildcard and they did not come up.
I then looked at the households on either side which included a 30 year old Christina Marrian, a 5 year old Thomas Marrian etc and on the other side a 55 year old William Strathdee a mason born in county. Again I searched for them on SP only to find that they don't exist either.
There therefore seems to be at least a page missing here. I contacted SP and they said that the responsibility was with GROS.
Anyone else have the same situation and is the responsibility with GROS??

SP, i.e. ScotlandonLine, can only ever make available the data that is given to them by GROS !
Sounds very much like a page (in the case of 1841 maybe a pair of pages) being missed in the indexing process, so that you should contact GROS (and seek a refund of credits if appropriate).
If you had had hard copies of pages either side you could have tested this by means of looking for others on those pages, and, if they duly "appeared" using the "look at next/previous" page function to see if the page numbers form a continuous run. (If folk from other pages don't appear than it could be the even rarer problem of part or more of an enumeration book being missed).

Hi Anne,
They are there on ScotlandsPeople, but indexed as Grollenmill. I found them using wildcards Gr*l*en*l after other combinations gave no results. John and Christina are there with youngsters Christian, Ann and Isabella.
I would suggest you send a contact form to ScotlandsPeople asking that they look at it and consider amending their indexes. Also, estimate how many credits you used trying and not finding them (or maybe if the free part of the search yielded no results, you never had anything to spend any credits on).
That family group is the only set of results that come back from the search using the wildcarded name above.
All the best,
AndrewP

Thanks Andrew
And I thought I had used every wildcard combination possible!! I'll contact SP again. Heaven alone knows what the other people on the page are indexed as. I'll have to go back and check that up.
In every other mis-spelling of the surname the well at the end had survived intact.
I don't think this could have cost me any credits as there was nothing to look at. The only thing to suffer was my time and patience. It was frustrating knowing they were there and being unable to view the image at the time.
Hi John
Did you ever get anywhere on the birth place for Christian? I can't find it anywhere given as anything other than Aberdeen. New Deer would be good as that is where there is a marriage for Isabel Walker and John Mackie. I still think they are her parents given that Isabella is Isabella Walker Grothenwell but I doubt if it can be proved.

Well done Andrew.
Anne,
I'm not sure, perhaps I have "made it" that because of the Walker name. I realise that is bad Genealogical work, making things fit, but sometimes I have been guilty of that, although I am trying not to do it now. I checked their marriage OPR yesterday and the Old Machar marriage says "both of this Parish". I'll keep checking, and let you know if I find where I got it from.
Thanks again.

Hi Anne,
Long time no speak, but I am still on the trial of the Grothenwells. The latest is that John is down as Grottenwell in the Oldmachar pauper records, there are at least two previous spellings the same Christian's death cert and John's burial record; I had put these down as incorrect spelling but as the pauper record may have came verbatim from John, but spelt phonetically by the clerk.
Please get in touch if you want to compare our findings.
All the best,
John
