I'm looking for anything on the Paterson & Anderson Families in and around Glasgow prior to 1864. I'm probably being a bit lazy asking this general question but I've hit something of a brickwall probably due to an inability (for either family) to pay the registration fees at the time.
I have found the following certificates / information already:
Dougald Campbell Paterson - 1861 Census and marriage in 1864
- no birth (1842 Renfrewshire known) or immigration to Australia (known 1864 - 1970s floods in Brisbane destroyed arrival documents)
- known parents are John Paterson and Jane Campbell - no certificates located
- known siblings from 1861 census: Sarah (Renfrewshire1841), Elizabeth (Renfrewshire 1844), Margaret (Ayrshire 1847), James (Renfrewshire 1849) and Mary (Ayrshire 1852) there are no birth documents to be found. Comment: I'd really like to find any descendants of these guys.
Janet Thomson Anderson dob 25Sept1838 - Barrhead. (Dougald's wife) Parents: William Andeerson & Margaret Stewart - no certificates for them. Known siblings: Margaret (1836) William(1847), Jean(1849) & Stewart (1851).
Andrew Bogle Paterson - birth unknown, died Australia 1889 aged 56yrs, believed to be Dougald's cousin. Parents: John Paterson and Ann Howieson. On 2nd January 1830: John Paterson and Ann Howieson register a child James in Lesmarhagow (Glasgow) while on the same day Capt John Paterson and Ann Houison register a son James in Edinburgh. Andrew is known to have had an older brother James.
Comment: I'm looking for the grandparents of both Dougald and Andrew Paterson (both believed to be descendant from John of Lochlyloch of Clydesdale fame) and the personal details of William Anderson and Margaret Stewart. I've tried Scotland's People and keep hitting a brick wall. Any lead will do ........... thanks,
Trevor Paterson

Re: Paterson & Anderson Families - Glasgow Pre 1864
Hello Trevor,
I’ve done a bit of digging on the Paterson side of things.
The Aberdeen Journal, Wednesday, February 25, 1829
MARRIAGES – At Edinburgh, on the 19th inst., by the Rev. Dr Jones, Captain John Paterson, late of the honourable East India Company’s service, Bengal, to Ann, second daughter of William Howieson, Esq. senior, writer in Edinburgh.
The Aberdeen Journal, Wednesday, December 9, 1829
BIRTHS – At No. 30, South Hanover Street, Edinburgh, on the 2d instant, the Lady of Captain John Paterson, East India Company’s service, of a son.
The Aberdeen Journal, Wednesday, December 14, 1831
At Clyde Vale, on the 8th inst. The Lady of Captain John Paterson, E.I.C.S. of a son.
An 1863 marriage notice in the Sydney Morning Herald.
“On the 8th instant, at Boree Nyrang, Molong, by the Rev. R. H. Mayne, of Orange, Andrew Boyle, fourth son of the late Captain John Paterson, of Crofton Hill, Lanarkshire, Scotland, to Rose Isabella, second daughter of Robert Johnstone Barton, Esq.” http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/13076951
There’s a chapter about Captain John Paterson, of Crofton Hill, Lanark in “Annals of the parish of Lesmahagow” 1864, p39. http://books.google.com.au/books?id=8uA ... in&f=false
Some genealogically relevant extracts but there’s lots more interesting stuff there:
“THE late Captain John Paterson was the second son of James Paterson of Glentagert, in the parish of Douglas. He greatly excelled in all athletic sports, and was a keen and very good curler. He might probably have followed the same line of life as his father (that of a sheep farmer), but when Volunteers were embodied throughout the country to repel the threatened invasion of Bonaparte, he was appointed Lieutenant of the corps raised in Douglas, when he seemed, for the first time, to have acquired a taste for a military career, and he wrote to his uncle, John Paterson, senior, of Carmacoup, then resident in London .............”
“…….. it was suggested to the Captain by his cousin and particular friend, the late Alexander Gillespie of Sunnyside, that ……..”
“We now resume the notice of Captain Paterson. On his return from India, he lived for some years at Netherhouse, Lesmahagow, and subsequently was placed on the recruiting service at Hamilton and Leeds. On his retirement from active life, he resided at Clydesvale, near Crossford. Captain Paterson was twice married. His first wife was Miss Johnstone of Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire, and sister to Major Johnstone of the Rifle Brigade, whose memoir and exploits appeared in the United Service Journal. Soon after his second marriage with Miss Howison of Clyde Grove, Captain Paterson purchased a small property, near Lanark, called Crofton Hill, where he died in 1850, aged 66, leaving one daughter and four sons, who all emigrated to Australia.”
Hope that’s useful,
Alan

Hello Annette,
I almost forgot to check SP’s Wills and Testaments.
For John Paterson, “CAPTAIN, OF CROFTONHILL, SPOUSE OF DECEASED CATHERINE JOHNSTON, AND DECEASED ANN HOWISON” there’s a “TRUST DISPOSITION AND SETTLEMENT; CODICIL” and also an “INVENTORY”.
For William Howison, “SR, WRITER IN EDINBURGH, DIED AT CLYDE GROVE, CO LANARK” and “WRITER IN EDINBURGH, SPOUSE OF JANET BOGLE” who died 8th December, 1832, there’s a “TRUST DISPOSITION AND SETTLEMENT” and something else.

Re: Paterson & Anderson Families - Glasgow Pre 1864
One last bit on this.
According to “History of the Counties of Ayr and Wigton“, 1863, p359.
http://books.google.com.au/books?id=9l0 ... 22&f=false
James Paterson of Glentaggart married Agnes Ranken and had children:
1. James, who succeeded in 1807 as heir of entail to his uncle, John Paterson of Carmacoup, in Lanarkshire.
2. Jean.
3. Mary.
4. John, who was a captain in the Hon. the East India Company’s Service.
5. Grace, who died in 1824.
There are linking bits of Banjo Paterson's ancestral jigsaw puzzle all over the place.

Re: Paterson & Anderson Families - Glasgow Pre 1864
Hi Trevor
I happened by chance upon your post re Paterson & Anderson Families - Glasgow Pre 1864 and assume you may still be interested in pursuing this research.
These Patersons are my husband's direct line, his great grandfather, James Paterson, having emigrated to Australia with Andrew Bogle Paterson in the 1850s. We have the extensive genealogy of this Paterson line going back to John Paterson of Lochlyoch (d.1682) and his wife, Christian Haddow (d. 1679). Unfortunately, there is no mention of Dugald Campbell Paterson or his parents, John Paterson and Jane Campbell.
However, I can tell you that the children of Captain John Paterson (son of James Paterson and Agnes Rankin, or Ranken) are:
William Paterson (son of John Paterson and Catherine Johnston), b. 1818, baptised 16 Aug 1818 in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire
James Paterson (son of John Paterson and Ann Howison), b. 2 Dec 1829 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, baptised 2 Jan 1830 in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire
John Paterson b. 1831, baptised 2 Jan 1832 in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, d. 1871 in Burrowa, NSW, Australia
Andrew Bogle Paterson b. 1833 in Lanark, Lanarkshire, baptised 8 May 1833 in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, occupation Grazier, d. 1889 in Burrowa, NSW, Australia
Janet Howison Paterson, b. 1834 in Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland, baptised 3 Nov 1834 in Lanark, Lanarkshire
If you send me a private message, I can provide further details with respect to spouses and descendants.
Cheers,
Rodeo
