ROBERT HOWIE DOB 03 09 1894
Dear All, Robert Howie was born in Cambuslang Scotland and one of his brothers George was my grand dad. His parents names were Robert Howie born c 1862 and his mother was Janet Legget McNair. I think he died in the war but cannot say where. If anyone could help me to get a copy of his death cert or any army records I should be ext. grateful.

Hi jjlmary312,
The Scottish war dead are listed on the Scottish National War Memorial website:
http://www.snwm.org/content/roll-search/
The Commonwealth war dead are listed on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website:
http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead.aspx
I had a quick look on both sites. They both give a short list of results for World War I. I didn't see any that could definitely be your man; however there are some that you can rule out. See what you think.
All the best,
AndrewP

The Mitchell Library (Glasgow) has various WW1 'lists', you could check through some of the documents here: http://www.glasgowlife.org.uk/libraries ... /home.aspx

Following on from Andrew's links this one looks the most likely - although he did have a cousin around the same age.
http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casua ... ,%20ROBERT
It doesn't say so there but according to Ancestry he was born at Cambuslang, signed up at Hamilton and lived at Burnbank. I see Janet died at Hamilton.
Regards,
Annette

No luck so far for a definite answer.
Tried Mitchells library and records in London but told I need the regiment or no of the soldier.

Two thirds of British Army service records were destroyed during WW2 bombing. If the record Annette pointed to was a service record were there any more clues on that?
The SNWM entry. http://www.snwm.org/content/roll-search ... 563&page=1
The Scotsman newspaper shows his next of kin address as Burnbank. Where was your Robert Howie living in 1911?

Hello Caz,
The Scotsman item is just the daily long list of Scottish soldiers who had been killed or wounded.
The Scotsman, 27 November, 1916
KILLED.
Cameronians (Scottish Rifles.)
Howie, 43378, R. (Burnbank.)
[The town shown against the soldier's name is the home of his next-of-kin.]
You can see the Glasgow Herald list here, he's there under Scottish Rifles. Zoom in a bit to make it clearer.
