ANONYMOUS records?

Post by WilmaM » Tue Aug 13, 2019 12:00 pm

I've just stumbled upon a birth where the surname is
ANONYMOUS

I wondered how common this was, and what would be the circumstances surrounding the entry.

There seems to be over 1000 cases since 1855.

Are they all cases where a newborn has been found dead, or would they also be of children who have subsequently been adopted and gone on to have a name?

The first case I came across has a matching death - both very early in the registration districts records [08 for the birth 05 for the death] so I'm assuming the same child.

There are unsurprisingly over 4,000 ANONYMOUS Deaths recorded - some with ages and/or forenames, but only up until 1991.
How are unidentified deaths now recorded?

Only 1 NOT KNOWN and 1 ANONYMOUS

Really curious are the marriages of
Unknown Unknown to Unknown Unknown .... in the 1990's :?:

I imagine that's the result of wonderful technology when a couple aren't aware of a parent's name - but nothing should surprise us in the world of genealogy.
