I can only assume the grand-daughter was sent away by the registrar to find her grandmother's name (including maiden surname) and this was entered within a week of the original registration - otherwise it would have needed an RCE.

The first name is little clearer looking at the document in its native TIF format.

The nice thing is that there is no auditory component to this forum. You don't HAVE to pronounce it, Andrew... just write it

I've re-uploaded a portion of the death certificate and coloured red the pieces that I believe belong to the R of the surname Roberston. So I think that takes the t possibility from the end of the first name.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks, that helps. It does, however, look something like the interface between the 't' of Margaret and the 'R' of Robertson below.

But there's definitely no 'e'. Perhaps his name was Rnt? I'd be tempted to go with Rbt, to make more sense, but can't manage to see a 'b' there

How about Wm - William. Compare the first letter of the surname to the W in Widower.

Okay, here's another way around the problem.

Elizabeth Glen died in 1871

In 1881 Edward is living with one Christina, who he claims is his wife. She was born in "Ginton, Gallowayshire" according to Ancestry.

On SP there are two marriages of an Ed* Robertson to Chri* between 1871 and 1881, both in Girthon, Kirkcudbright

Could these be the same places?

One or the other of these marriages might give us another go at his father's name, far away from the sinister hand of Mr. Archer...

It may well be worth looking at the marriage certificate of EDWARD ROBERTSON and CHRISTINA DUNCAN or HORNSBY in Girthon, Kirkcudbrightshire in 1873.

Hi all
Andrew may well with right with Wm - with Mr Archer, anything is possible. He does not even form the same letters in the same way each time.... a very creative streak. I have visions of the poor young Master Archer forced into being a registrar by his father Gilbert (who was the previous registrar for S.Leith) when what he really wanted to do was travel to France and paint.....
