James was living with Archibald Crawford and his wife Isabella Stewart in 1901. I wonder if she was related to your Agnes and Charles.

Annette

so as it stands i have no DOB , as the marriage says he was born 1870 , his death 1867 ,
i cant look the poor house records until i get a DOB , i am so stuck

Like Lesley said you can search the poorhouse records by name then year and place of birth so it's not as big a task as you may think. He may even be indexed under both surnames if you're lucky.

You say he had his birth certificate -but I take it you have never seen it- so who registered his death? Was it somebody who would know his actual birth details from that certificate, therefore making the death entry details more accurate?

I recently did some research for a friend to find out more about her grandfather. On his 3 marriage entries he gave his parents as Eliza Wilson and John Gibson.

I easily found him in 1901 living at Helensburgh.

John Gibson Age: 23 Where born: Stirlingshire, Stirling
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1878

Here he is in 1891 living at Perthshire-

John G Kettles Age: 16 Where born: Fowlis Wester, Perthshire
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1875

and 1881 at the same place-

John Kettles Age: 6 Where born: Fowlis, Perthshire
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1875

Here is his birth -

JOHN GIBSON

22 MAY 1874 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

Parents:
Father: JOHN GIBSON
Mother: JANE WILSON

I was lucky to get help from a sorely missed member of TS on this one and between us we eventually unravelled this man's life. The poorhouse records helped a lot!!

If you live in Glasgow you should definitely head for The Mitchell and the poorhouse applications. I tried to get there this morning but the traffic was so bad I gave up and turned back.

hi Annette
where do i get the names of the poorhouses ?
it was my oldest Aunt who registered the death ,
this is what it says , and no i havent seen the birth cert , probably it was with my oldest aunt long dead ,
James Stewart
formerly Cameron ,
his wifes name
then11th July 1958 and time
his add which is right
M age 91

Grrrrr why didnt i see this properly
Elizabeth Cameron , afterwards Stewart deceased ,
this is what i said all along , i done a search many years ago at reg house , and i found all this out , now it was handwritten and the notes got lost as i moved twice since then ,
i am certain i found she married a James Stewart ,not long after the birth , as in months ,but i cant recall what he done as a occupation ,
we grew up thinking these two were his parents , and finding the marriage threw us , when it gave the info on Charles and Agnes , yet the cousin said these people adopted him very young , and when they died he ended up in the work house /poorhouse , he never hid this from anyone ,
i am banging my head off the desk this time , i had this full version on my external , as i had cropped it , put it through another prog as it was a bad copy , SP sent me this one as it was so bad , i am screaming now , but glad when i say , i was right all along , yet the others said not ,

There is this marriage in 1868 at Calton that I'd be tempted to look at -

ELIZABETH CAMERON

Marriages:
Spouse: JAMES STEWART
08 JUL 1869 Calton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

Possibly the Elizabeth Cameron you found at King Street in 1861?

It looks as though this couple may have moved to Ireland after the marriage - you can see children at the IGI born Co Antrim.

Out of interest what were the parents names on their marriage entry?
