New member in need of help.....

Post by LindaMc » Sun Jun 26, 2005 12:47 am

Can anyone help me find the birth of my GGgrandfather, Samuel Barons.
He was married to Margaret Sloan on 2nd March 1849 (aged 21) at Maybole, Ayr.
He died on 4th June 1862 at Boyd Street Kilmarnock.
His parents were John Barrons and Elizabeth McCandlish, married 10th January 1825, Ballantrae,Ayrshire.I thihk he would have been born about 1828. Many thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Hello Linda,

I had a look at the IGI, as I'm sure you have, and found what appear to be his sisters. I have heard other members talk of only girls being recorded in some parishes and this could be the case here.

I will be going to the Mitchell Library later this week and I will have a wee look at the film for you.

Regards,
Annette M

I looked at the IGI and found only Margaret Barran in Ballantrae, Ayrshire on 18-Apr-1826.

On the Individual Record page, go to the bottom and click on the batch number (in this case C115794) and you will be returned to the IGI search page with only "British Isles" and "C115794" entered. Without putting any names or any other search criteria in, click "search". That should produce a list of all of batch C115794 - all of the people baptised in Ballantrae from 1819 to 1854 that made it into the OPRs. You will find the list to be the females only. I have never seen an official explanation to this. It only occurs on the online version of the IGI. It occurs for a fair amount of parishes in Scotland - I will stab a guess at about 20% to 30% of the parishes. The microfiche versions of the IGI and the LDS FHC versions do not have this anomaly. Nor does the index on ScotlandsPeople.

I would guess that you need to consider a number of different spellings for the surname. The ones that come to mind are: Barran, Barron, Barrans, Barrons, Barnes (maybe Burns).

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Samuel Barons (Barnes)

Post by LindaMc » Sun Jun 26, 2005 3:37 pm

Thanks to everyone for the welcome messages and particularly to Annette and Andrew for the offer of help.

As you say I had found his sister Margaret on IGI but I had not realised that the on-line information was different to that on the microfiche.

I haven't been able to find him on SP using the different spellings

I can see I'll have to be making a trip to our local LDS branch soon.

Thank you.

Hi Linda,

These are from the LDS Vital Records Index, but alas no Samuel. He would certainly fit in for 1828 / 1829.

In 1851 census at Maybole, Samuel (23) was as BURNS with wife Margaret (21) & John (abt 1).

By 1861 census, at Galston as BARRONS.
Samuel 32
Margaret 29
John 11
Elizabeth 6
Janet 4
Samuel 2

I dare say you'll know of the 4 BARNES children to Samuel & Margaret in the IGI.

Jack,

Does this mean I don't have to look at the film when I visit The Mitchell?

Hi Annette,

I really haven't a clue! Perhaps one of the experts will help out with the question?

If you were looking then it should probably only be between, say, 1827 to 1830, and IF there IS a record then the most likely years could be 1828 or 1829.

ps Annette - seems it'll now be the end of July the Mitchell will be closing for a wee while, though they'll be trying to keep a bit of the Family History section going. Whatever that means! Maybe nearer the time they'll know what will be available.
