I cant find a suicide

Post by winger » Sun Mar 30, 2008 1:50 am

Hi, I have been looking for a suicide for ages - can anyone help.
I have a patrick McCann born 1929 who committed suicide sometime around 1945 and 1956. I know he died in maryhill. I have checked SP for any McCann deaths in that timeframe with that DOB and without that DOB. I have tried with his mother's name (kelly) and without. I have tried
Kelly as the surname and put in the ages 17-25 (family history says he was around 20) and I still can't find him. It's driving me daft!!!

does anyone have any other suggestions!!
thanks a lot

Hi Winger,

Have you been searching in Maryhill only? One suggestion I have for you is that he may have been resident in Maryhill, but upon committing suicide did not die immediately, but died later in hospital. If he died in Glasgow Royal Infirmary, then (1935 onwards) you need to be looking in Townhead registration district.

As for other hospitals, I am not sure.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Winger:

Sometimes less information entered is more helpfull.

There are only 60 Patrick McCann listings in the death index between 1929 - 1950. It may help to use 3 credits to print out the list of possibilities, because neither his age, nor his mother's name may not yet appear on the Death index, or because it wasn't known by the person who registered the death.

If you add Kelly as the Mother's maiden name, you only come up with 1 listing - BUT how many ways can you spell Kelly?

Best wishes,
Frances

Hello Winger,

If you still draw a blank and he was living with or near family you could check out the possibility that he was buried in a family plot or in a close relatives grave.

For the moment, and some time well into the future, with very few exceptions, mainly in the 1850s, the mother's maiden name only appears in the death index from 1974 onwards.

Limiting the search to Glasgow City only, and born 1929 +/- 1 year, there's one very tempting death index entry, -

1959 MCCANN Patrick Kelly M 29 KELVIN GLASGOW/LANARK 644/07 0819, but no image online for a few years .........

From memory, Kelvin borders Maryhill registration district.

found my suicide!!!

well well well - I have finally found my suicide (actually a very very kind genalogical angel found him for me!)

It transpires the death was 1959 and he died by gas poisoning.
my understanding of the circumstance is that he gambled money belonging to another family member and rather than admit what he had done he killed himself by putting money in the meter and gassing himself. It was a pretty desperate act and very sad for such a young man.

It's great to have the record - but it makes you think when you see the details printed and realise that someone was so desperate he would kill himself over 5 pounds.

Hi Winger:

From the currency conversions:

Purchasing Power of British Pounds from 1264 to 2007

Current data is only available till 2007. In 2007, £5 0s 0d from 1959 is worth

£83.76 using the retail price index.

The sadness of the situation is overwhelming, yet still happening.
