stuck in a rut

Post by Justjan » Sun Mar 01, 2009 4:19 pm

when i searched for my grandparents marriage , i was surprised to see parents for my Granfather ,the names being new to me , anyway it was definately him , and so was the Grandmother so no mistakes ,
when i searched for his death in 1958 , i was taken aback at the information
saying he was Illegitimate and his Mother was a Eliz Cameron , well yes that we did know , or this was all we were told ,
now seems he was in the poorhouse as his folks died when he was young ,
folks being the ones on the marriage cert , as he thought this was them ,
after marriage and a few children ,for some reason he needed his birth details and from there found he wasnt these peoples son ,
i have been every which way looking and can find nothing to find out where the information came from ,
so as it stands i have no DOB , as the marriage says he was born 1870 , his death 1867 ,
i cant look the poor house records until i get a DOB , i am so stuck

Hi Jan,

Welcome to TalkingScot. [scotland-flag]

Where did you get all the information you have so far...was it stories handed down from family?

Sorry, just more questions and no answers. Assuming he was born in Scotland, have you looked for a birth certificate with the mother's name of Eliz Cameron or variations on Scotland's People (link at top of this page)?

Regards,
Anne H

Hi Jan
and welcome to TalkingScot :D
cant look the poor house records until i get a DOB , i am so stuck
In what area of the country was he born (census should tell you)? What is his name?

If Glasgow area then you can search the poor relief applications by name, and order up any that look likely, but not sure where you are based so this may not be a possiblity for you.

Best wishes
Lesley

hi
i got the information off certificates i got from SP , i have tired a lot of James Camerons from 1868-1870 and got so many , i cant possibly go through all these , as none will tell him its the right one ,
i have tired searching in the census for the people on the marriage lines and got around 4 possible couples ,
i cant get the couple and my Grandfather on any one census , so not sure what else can be done ,
unless i could get Valuation rolls , but then i dont have an add , i only have the add on the marriage in 1891 , when my Granda was 21/24 , and that is the same as my Grandmothers parents , so assume hes moved there on marriage , as it was Hill Street and he lived there a lot of years, thats all i have , if James was born before april 1871 surely he would be on the 1871 census ,? unless hes been born 1868 and in the Poorhouse by 1871 , i have tried a few of the poorhouse records , i cant get a James Stewart , with an age thereabouts ,
think i am stuck

Hi Jan
In what area of the country was he born? Where is "Hill Street"?? What town or city?
i only have the add on the marriage in 1891 , when my Granda was 21/24
Which age does is state on the marriage entry, 21 or 24?
i cant get the couple and my Grandfather on any one census ,
What are the names of the couple?
if James was born before april 1871 surely he would be on the 1871 census ,? unless hes been born 1868 and in the Poorhouse by 1871
The poorhouses were also enumerated for the census.

So that we can try to help you, we need to know what info you already have - names, dates, places etc.

Best wishes
Lesley

hi
Hill street is Glasgow number 23 , they were there till after 1905 , he is down as 21 on the marriage cert ,
and the couple are
Charles Stewart hand loom weaver
and
Agnes Stewart ,ms Mcpherson ,
all i found had children of there own , unless they all died before they took my Granda in , and hes been too young to know ,
i know its now the Couple from Bothwell as a Family Tree has been done on that , and i had a reply , so not them ,i cant rule out they were relations or just friends of the Mothers ,
the death cert says James Cameron Illigitimate , afterwards Stewart
but it does go under Stewart in the deaths, so wonder has it been changed legally somewhere

Hi Jan,

On using the online IGI at http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... _form=true you can enter James Cameron, son of Elizabeth Cameron born 1870 ± 5 years in the British Isles. That produces 6 results. Two are in Scotland: one in Calton (Glasgow) and one in Kilchoman (Islay).

Does that help any?

All the best,

AndrewP

There are a couple of candidates on IGI

JAMES CAMERON (extract)
Male
Event(s):
Birth: 13 MAY 1867 Calton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Parents:
Mother: ELIZABETH CAMERON

JAMES CAMERON (extract)
Male
Event(s):
Birth: 31 AUG 1868 Kilchoman, Argyll, Scotland
Parents:
Mother: ELIZA CAMERON

JAMES LYON CAMERON (extract)
Male
Event(s):
Birth: 28 MAY 1866 Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
Parents:
Mother: ELIZABETH CAMERON

Given that you did not mention a middle name and that your chap seems to be living in Glasgow, the first one seems the most likely of the three at this point. You'd need to see the original birth entry (from SP) to know - I suspect all three are illegitimate, but maybe the place of birth of the first one would give some hints as to whether it is your man or not?

Best wishes
Lesley
