I've been searching for a death (with the additional issues of the SP searches) but understanding how the married women searches work, I still can't find this death. Would appreciate if anyone could try & find what I am probably missing.
I am looking for the death of Ann Mathers. I have these census records
1841 Scotland Kincardineshire Fettercairn
Nether Mill
John Mathers 40 Distiller N
Ann Mathers 40 N
Catherine do 12 Y
David do 10 Y
James do 8 Y
1851 Scotland Kincardinshire Fordoun
Muir Edge
John Mathers 54 head Brechin, Forfarshire Farmer of 12 acres
Ann Mathers 54 wife Stracathro Forfarshire
Margret Duncan 2 g grandchild Foudoun Kincardinshire
Jean Donald 14 servant Marykirk Kincardinshire
1861 Scotland Kincardineshire Fordoun
Muir Edge
John Mathers 64 head Brechin, Forfarshire Farmer of 16 acres
Ann Mathers 64 wife Stracathro Forfarshire
I cannot find a marriage for John and Ann, but the baptisms of their children give Ann as Ann Thomson. John died in 1862 & his death certificate says married to Ann Thomson.
I think this is Ann in 1871
1871 Scotland Kincardine Fourdoun
Monboddo St
James Milne 67
Margaret Milne 53
Georgina G Milne 27
Ivrin O Milne 17
Mary Farquhar 64
Elizabeth Kurman 62
Annie Mathers 74 (no relationship given) born Stracathro Forfar Retired
Much appreciated if anyone can find her death. Son James went to Australia & married in 1861 - but I find no trace of his mother here.

Re: Cannot find a death
Hi Trish,
Her death is there in 1876 in Arbroath. She is there as Ann MATHERS or THOMSON, age 76 (3 years out according to the census results).
I had to go the long way round to find her. I searched for Ann* Mather* having died 1871 to 1900, at age over 70, and copied all the results out to Microsoft Excel. On seeing that the majority of these were in Angus (Forfarshire), I then searched for Ann* Thom*son in Angus (Forfarshire) having died 1871 to 1900, at age over 70, and copied these results into the same table. I added a column to subtract the age from the year at death to give an assumed birth year. That shortened the list. Then I sorted the list by the assumed birth year, and looked for two records together with the same details apart from surname, and this one showed up. Cutting the Thomsons down to one county was a bit of a gamble, but it was to cut the results down from over 400 to 55, a much more manageable number.
As for the 1871 census, and showing no relationship. When you view the original census page, you see that she was the only person in the household. There were four households on that page with only one occupant, and these all had been given no relationship. I have never seen this used as a method before - all other ones that I have seen with a single occupant, that occupant is shown as head of the household.
All the best,
AndrewP

Andrew
Thank you so much - I did all sorts of searches with no success. All my thanks - she had to be there somewhere - thought I had checked them all - obviously not!

I was going to download the census if I couldn't get further with the death - many thanks also for that information.
