William Stewart death record 1936 - 1980

Post by IssyM » Tue Mar 28, 2017 9:57 am

Can anyone give me some hints on how to find a death certificate when I don't have any clues as to the year?

I am researching a William Stewart born around 1880 to a Jane Kerr and William Stewart. I don't have his birth certificate, but I do have his marriage certificate. William married my Great Aunt Marion Smith in 1913, she died in 1936 at age 52 and the address is listed as Knightswood Road, Patrick. William was the informant and recorded as a retired Fire Brigade Foreman. Marion was born in 1885 to Peter Smith and Mary McCallum, 14 Rottenrow, Glasgow. Peter Smith was a Janitor at Townhead Public School.
I am hoping to find out if Marion and William had any children.

When I look on Scotland's People and put in the years from 1936 to 1980, there are over 900 entries. I decided to look more closely at Glasgow and the greater Glasgow area to start with, but still have quite a few names to eliminate. Is this a wise decision to break the entries down? As I don't know the areas of Glasgow well, I have had to go through each one to find out where it is. I see no point in looking at Edinburgh or the Highlands for example.

I have been researching my Smith Family for several years, and have had some successes lately and more recently with Marion.

Hoping someone can help me further.

Was the address 155 Knightswood Road. If so then William was still alive in 1958. There is Sarah Stewart at the same address but perhaps he married again.

If you search again from 1958 - 1976 (when mother's maiden names are recorded) you cut it down to 43 in Lanarkshire...still too many I'm afraid.

Annette

Thank you, that is a great help.

I know that Marion was named after her Grandmother who was often called Sarah, in some of the records, so maybe it is a daughter.
I have looked up Scotland's People, but I don't seem to get the same results as you for William's death between 1958 and 1976 in Lanarkshire. I am not sure that I am ticking the correct place names. When I put in his Mother's maiden name I am getting no returns at all. I am sure it must be something that I am doing wrong.

Can I ask where you found that William was still living in Knightswood Road, during 1958? I think my lack of knowledge is showing.

I will keep trying.
Thank you,
Isabella

Annette probably has access to a later edition of one of these. (The Post-Office annual Glasgow directory 1941-1942). https://archive.org/stream/postofficean ... 8/mode/2up

Hi Isabella,

You will find his death in 1960 - Glasgow, Springburn. The place of death, 133 Balornock Road, is Stobhil Hospital. His home address is given as 155 Knightswood Road. The certificate shows that he remarried after Marion's death (she is named as Minnie on his death certificate). His widow registered his death.

His widow, Sarah Grier Stewart, died in 1963 - registered in Glasgow, Kelvin. Died in the Western Infirmary, home address 155 Knightswood Road.

All the best,

Great stuff Andrew. :)

Sorry Isabella I didn't explain myself well regarding the mother's maiden name. This is indexed in SP from 1976 onwards, although you do get some before that, and not between the dates I gave.

Annette

When you have the death dates you could check the newspapers for a death and/or funeral notice.

Glasgow Herald - https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=S ... 0%2C184325

Evening Times - https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=q ... 0%2C150770

The search facility is usually useless. Click on “Browse this Newspaper” and navigate to the appropriate editions.

Also check the Acknowledgements column and twelve months later In Memoriam.

Thank you Annette, Andrew and Alan,

I am very grateful for your help.

I assume from what has been discovered that William and Marion did not have any children. Would I be correct in this thinking?
I do know my Father had one cousin a Policeman but what his name was or who his parents were I do not know, but it is starting to look like the last person for me to research in this family is James born around 1876, Tradeston, who has proved very hard to trace after the 1901 census. I thought as the eldest in the family he might appear on his Father's death certificate but he didn't.

My Smith family have all been from in and around Glasgow City. To me in New Zealand, the fact that I was born in Glasgow has always given me a sense of pride, I didn't understand until recently that some of my maternal side think that it is best kept a secret where I was born. Can anyone tell me, is this a general feeling still held in Scotland?
I am forever learning, thank you.
Isabella
