PLEASE EXPLAIN!!!!

Post by jennovo » Sat Feb 25, 2006 2:44 am

Hello all,

I have a registration of marriage from Scotlandspeople which says the marriage was "declared, in the presence of......." at 52 West Nile St, Glasgow. Does this mean that they simply declared their marriage in front of their friends and family and had it registered at a later date?

Also is there a Govanhill street and Govanhill suburb in Glasgow?

Thank you,
Jen

Hi Jen,

This was the means of having an irregular marriage registered. The marriage had to be declared in front of two witnesses, and was declared to the Sheriff-substitute who issued a warrant that could be taken to the registrar.

This method of registration existed from 1855 to 1940, when the Marriage (Scotland) Act 1939 came into force. Then civil marriages came into being and you could have a non-religious marriage in the registrar's office by the registrar.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Yes, there is a section of Glasgow called Govanhill and a street called Govanhill.

You can locate both at http://www.mitchelllibrary.org/vm/

In 1941 my grandmother lived at 31 Govanhill Street, Glasgow :o
