If you spot for sale anywhere
"The Lambs of Lanarkshire and Their Descendants in America"
by Mary Grant Charles published 1972
...please let me know !
the above publication only seems to be available in US/Canada libraries .

I have registered somewhere to be notified if a 2nd hand copy comes up for sale.

I know from the snippet view from Google books that it contains many references to my own family and it's driving me crazy !

Hello Sally,

It looks like the LDS library in the US has a copy of the book. I was wondering whether it is possible to order books in like they do with microfilm but that doesn’t appear to be an option.

When I search in Google books all I get is:

No preview available - About this book - Add to my library

From Australia I don’t get any snippets, all I get to see are the chapter headings.

Whether you get to see a full view, limited preview, snippet view or no preview depends on the part of the world you’re in. Maybe if someone in the USA, for example, searched for the book they might get something better, a limited preview for example.

I don't get the snippets either now .

Maybe I was in the UK when I did or maybe they changed the access - Google was in dispute with some US publishers - now resolved it seems ... .

Looks like it may be possible to purchase and download books via Google which are out of print but not out of copyright ( like the the Lambs of Lanarkshire... )

This may only apply to US users - but perhaps I can enter into an arrangement with SKS from the States ...???

couldn't come up with a match for your book?

It was digitized in 2007 as a part of the collection of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Copies are held in the following libraries:
New York Public Library-Research (this means it is not available for loan)
New England Historic Genealogical Society-Boston
Library of Congress
Library and Archives Canada
Allen County Public Library-Fort Wayne IN
Newberry Library-Chicago IL
Wisconsin Historical Society-Madison WI
Houston Public Library-Houston TX

The publisher is W. D. Lambe, Port Huron, Michigan. A quick Google search on the publisher does not return any useful information.

The Allen County Public Library will do limited page copies for a reasonable fee. See their web site at http://www.acpl.lib.in.us

The Google settlement sounds like a great idea. Having an out of print copyrighted book locked away in a few libraries that few people can access or on sale at a price that few can afford doesn’t help anyone, least of all the author or copyright owner. I’m don’t know whether this will be a plus or a minus for the second-hand book trade in the US or anywhere else that ends up with a similar system.

The document http://books.google.com/booksrightshold ... lement.pdf (watermarked Awaiting Court Approval) details methods of access and in regard to purchasing access to out of print copyrighted books online says:

“Consumer Purchases: Individual users will be able to purchase the right to access Books online. Rightsholders will have two options for setting the sale price of their Books: they can set the price themselves or they can allow Google to set the price based on a multi-factor formula that is designed to maximize revenues for the sale of the Book (the “Settlement Controlled Price”).”

Let’s hope the prices are reasonable.

Thanks Bob & Marilyn - if I don't manage to track down a copy of the whole book by next summer say ( probably my next opportunity for wandering around graveyards and poring over dusty old tomes etc ), I will ask one of those libraries for copies of the relevant pages .

I wonder how long before the book purchasing option comes online ?

Today while I was filing my fingernails at work

I whipped out my cell phone and dialed up the Milstein Division of the New York Public Library.

The gent who answered the phone was friendly enough and he confirmed that the reference section does in fact own a copy of the Lambs of Lanarkshire. He said the book is protected by copyright for 75 years.

There wasn't any information listed on his computer about google books, but he didn't rule out the possibility for the future.
