bad news - Higginson will only copy out of copyright books.

On a brighter note I can get a snippet view again on Google ! ! :o

Oh what a pity :(

What I don't understand (knowing nothing about copyright, mind you) is if the book is copyrighted for 75 years, how can "google books" print it?

At least you know that the Milstein Div. of the NYPL has a copy on file.

Sorry that didn't pan out for you Sally.

Regards

Hello Sally,

The book should become available for USA purchase on Google before too long. The copyright owner will make more money that way than having it out of print and gathering dust. As you said before you should be able to work around the USA restriction.

I’m getting the snippets now as well. Try searching within the book and you may get different snippets. If you’re desperate you could try this method, extracted from a previous posting, to expand the text visible in the google results beyond that visible in the snippet.

I once worked out a way to manipulate the ‘No preview ones” so you can expand the info you get. This is handy if you can’t get hold of the book and are desperate to see a little bit more. It’s possibly not so helpful with this sort of a list of names.

This is your normal search result
1843-1846. Clerihew, Alexander. Entd. I. 1822-1824. Clerihew ... Clerihew, William. Entd. III. 1825-1827. Clerk, Alexander. Entd. IV. 1826-1827. ...

Search Google books for the tail end of the above and add quotes i.e.
“Clerk, Alexander. Entd. IV. 1826-1827"

Result will be: (make sure you’re still getting the same page i.e. 11.)
Entd. I. 1822-1825. Clerihew, William. Entd. III. 1825-1827. Clerk, Alexander. Entd. IV. 1826-1827. Clerk, Alexander K. Entd. V. 1827-1829. Clerk, Leslie. ...

Search for
“1827-1829. Clerk, Leslie”

This result means you could be at a dead end
Entd. I. 1822-1825. Clerihew, William. Entd. III. 1825-1827. Clerk, Alexander. Entd. IV. 1826-1827. Clerk, Alexander K. Entd. V. 1827-1829. Clerk, Leslie. ...

Then go in the other direction search from the front end of the original result
“1843-1846. Clerihew, Alexander”

Result will be:
1809-1812. Clark, William. Entd. IV. 1835-1837. Clark, William [Mortimer]. Entd. I. 1845-1847. Clark, William G. Entd. II. 1843-1846. Clerihew, Alexander. ...

And that might be another dead end – but you end up with in total

1809-1812. Clark, William. Entd. IV. 1835-1837. Clark, William [Mortimer]. Entd. I. 1845-1847. Clark, William G. Entd. II. 1843-1846. Clerihew, Alexander. Entd. I. 1822-1824. Clerihew ..............………….. Entd. I. 1822-1825. Clerihew, William. Entd. III. 1825-1827. Clerk, Alexander. Entd. IV. 1826-1827. Clerk, Alexander K. Entd. V. 1827-1829. Clerk, Leslie. ...

Hope that’s useful,
Alan

Hello Paul L and [TS_welcome]
Nice of you to join the forum just to help out! Sally has been a regular poster here, but for some reason hasn't been logged in on the forum since last July. With some luck she will get an email about your post and log back in.

In the meantime, if you have any genealogical puzzles for us, bring them on!

All the best,
Sarah

Thank you for the welcome!

My big genealogical puzzle is the family at the core of this book. The Lambies of Ladybrow Farm in Darvel and surrounding farms who fought at Drumclog and Bothwell Brig in 1679. The son of James Lambie who was wounded in the latter conflict and charged with treason was James Lambie of Mauchline who lived at Garfel near Sorn. His son, also a James Lambie, was the Kirk Elder who with Willie Fisher counselled Jean Armour when she became pregnant with Robert Burns child.

I have traced a number of Lambie trees back to a triangle of Galston, Mauchline and Darvel. In fact, some twenty Lambie families lived in an eight square mile area around this time.

My quest is to connect them all together!

Warmest Regards,

Paul Lambie

Hi Paul,
Sounds like you have enough to do to keep you out of trouble! They've got to be related somehow, but it is very hard to untangle the relationships that far back. I hope for your sake that they all left wills and mentioned each child and their spouse! Got to be very rewarding when you make a connection.

Best of luck with this-- may 2013 be the year that it all becomes clear xmas:biggrin:

Sarah
