Is this it, Am I the first or have I missread the layout? If not, can I kick off by saying, by hook or by crook, I'll be the first in this book.

Ok Marylin, I'll try to be serious and hold my innane comments in reserve for the time being. I just wanted to be first, that's all.
I'm interested in Scottish social history and felt an need to know something about its general history in parallel. As a lazy reader,I searched for a single book which covered everything I needed to know. I realise now that that's like peering at a map of the world on the head of a pin.
Eventually, I bought, wait for this, The History of Scotland by Houston and Knox. First printed in 2006, it comes in two volumes and at fifty to seventy pounds, not cheap. But, for those who want to cover the broad and detailed aspects of Scottish history without filling A bookshelf and emptying thier pockets, this might be a good choice.
Any comments will oblige. In the meantime, all the best of the season to you.
