Charles Gordon
Thanks for youre reply,i did ask someone at SP to decipher this for me and they said it was written in pencil and was quite hard to make out.She said the first part was Retired? which i would have thought was obvious at 85 years old and she said another part had Post Copy too ?His parents were George Gordon and Christian Arbuthnot who also stayed in Auchleuchries.I definitely think that this is Charlottes father but i dont know who her mother could be.I also thought maybe the reason i cant find her birth is because she was illegitemate and she didnt have his name when first born. I will probably never find out.Out of curiousity where are the Allison's from that you are researching,my husband is an Allison. Thanks again for youre help.

Hi again
Ooops!
A slight misstatement above....Charles GORDON Physician surgeon landowner man of mystery did die in 1872....died on May 30th to be exact......and the 2nd marriage of Joseph GORDON took place on July 6th same year......sooooo....that would make both of the parents dec'd as Joseph stated. However.....I still don't believe it's the same Charles due to the nature of the occupations!!
Best wishes
Jean

Charlotte Gordon.
i actually dont think they that Joseph Gordon was related to Charlotte.Charlotte was married in Cruden and had 3 of her 4 children there so i think she would have been born there.I think Charles Gordon the man of many occupations was her father.

I feel as though we've hacked our way through the jungle only to find we're back where we began.
Sadly I have to agree that proving Charlotte's birth parents is not likely to be possible. There is plenty of work you could do in digging deeper and looking for all GORDON's and trying to connect them.....but once again very doubtful it will help you find Charlotte's mum. I too think you have the right chap in Charles GORDON man of mystery!
As for my ALLISON name.....that is my own mystery. A family legend had the sherriff of Glasgow (who I believe was one Archibald AL(L)ISON) as an uncle to my GrGrGrandmother who was supposedly raised by him. Can't prove a single thing about that but have proven I have some grand porkie tellers in my tree!. Darned name will haunt me all my days

Allison's
My Allisons are all from Kettle in Fife, they were there for nearly 300 years dont think they moved till the 1900's. I think ive contacted every Gordon that ive seen and still cant find her but i think she was illegitemate.I may come across it some day in my search, thanks again.

I have looked again at the 1851 Census for Cruden and Charles Gordon's son is definitely called Joseph.he is 14 so he was probably born around 1836/37 in Monquhitter.Cant find his birth maybe another of Charles illegitemate children that were not given his name at birth but may have acquired it later

Has the FreeCEN transcriber made a mistake? To err is human.
You need to download the image from ScotlandsPeople. That is the original, from which the FreeCEN entry has been transcribed.
There is another difference between Jean's interpretation of the original image and that transcribed for FreeCEN - James Willox / Wilton.
All the best,
AndrewP

I'll allow that my WILTON interpretation might be WILLON but I honestly did not see WILLOX. The t if it were a t was not crossed...but then then t if it were a t in SUTHERLAND was not crossed either. But I do know John when I see it and this ain't no Joseph.
