Hi Lainey

Earlier you asked whether you should be doubting the information you have gathered.
All I can say is that you have asked some good questions on here and made effective contributions based on the research 'you' have done and the proper verifications you have made.
Trust your own work which you have carefully verified by your own efforts. Hold reservations about information anyone else gives you.

On TalkingScot people offer suggestions to help each other progress.
If they lead to new certificates and relationships it is still down to you to decide whether they are properly verified and can be accepted.

I'm not putting down the professionals who do this for a living. there are times when they can access things we can't because of work, shifts, distance etc but the real joy is finding for yourself. Then you know it is correct, as near as anyone can know.

Hi Russell
Thank you very much for your reassurances.... I think sometimes the more you read about this hobby, the more you doubt yourself! After the replies on expert G though, I will stick with going with my own info.
It would be great if I could follow up on the other ladys info to check, but the problem is that John died pre reg, and I know he is not buried in the same graveyard as Henry was ...... believe me when I say I have looked :D
Once again, my thanks

Hi Lainey,

I would say that it is your research that has come from 'expert genealogy'. You have the certificates etc to prove who Henry's parents were. It would be interesting to know how your correspondent verified that her John Hardie who died in 1847 (before the start of registration) was the same as the one born in 1810 in Polmont.

Isobel

Hi Isabel
This was what I wondered about. I keep seeing that others can find deaths etc on the OPR's. I dont know if Polmont just wasnt as good at keeping records of this as other areas, or where you can get that info. The only way I have found deaths pre 1855 is from any existing gravestones. I have a feeling I am missing something. Its like seeing people who get right back to the 1600's but with death dates listed.........I must be a bit thick but I just dont get it! The only exception being that maybe titled families etc kept their own records etc, but mine were just plain boatmen and miners, alot of whom couldnt even sign their own names...........I'm still very proud of them regardless  Sooooo, the next question has to be, how can this be done or Can it be done? Dont misunderstand, I can see how you can "guestimate" the previous generation to the best of your ability etc, its the death dates that I wonder about. OPRs for marriages, [I mean the actual books that you can view in the Library etc, rather than entries at SP] often dont have the parent's names of the bride and groom on.........ohhhhhhhh! I just dont get it........need coffee now lol

Hi Lainey
.....I can view these records but only from Reg house......
You can view them at your Local LDS Family History centre (you may need to order them in for a small fee) , your local library possibly (free) (certainly Stirling would have them) and also at the Scottish Genealogy Society in Edinburgh (£5 per day for a visitor- they hold all OPRs for the whole of Scotland) and possibly also at the National Library of Scotland http://www.nls.uk/helpfor/familyhistory.html
(free) - I know they hold a good collection of OPR films, but you would need to check that they had Polmont. I'm sure thay had a list online, but can't see it for the moment - will post back when/if I find it!

Also worth a quick read of:

Hi Lesley
Thank you for this info. Just had a read of the link you sent and it was very enlightening. I will nip into the library in Falkirk tomorrow, after work, and check to see if they have these or if Stirling do......if not a trip to Edinburgh is on the cards.
