Hi Nina,
Roughmussel still exists! It's on the boundary between Paisley and Glasgow at a place called the Hurlet, nr Crookston. It's not now a village in its own right, though.
If you look at
http://leisure.ordnancesurvey.co.uk and type in 'Hurlet', you'll get an idea of where it is.
Best wishes

Nina,
I've just re-read your post. I think that Nether Arthowrly is probably Nether ARTHURLIE - quite a few places/organisations in Barrhead & Neilston [which are next door to each other in modern day East Renfrewshire] have Arthurlie in their title.
Best wishes
Brian

Nina,
I used to live and work in Paisley until recently and went to University there, so i know the area quite well - I'm just glad that there's something I can help with, as people on this site have been soooooooo good to me!

ninatoo wrote:I obtained both OPR's and I am sure they are the same couple. The Neilston one is for John Airston of Barrhead and Mary Adams of Roughmuscle (?) in Paisley who gave up their names for proclamation of marriage and it looks like this parish had a 'give to the poor' fee...as all on the page gave something to the poor, John and Mary 1/6...is that the right way to write it?
Hi Nina,
I have seen quite a few OPRs that are like a financial balance sheet, showing monies paid by those getting married, monies paid for use of the mortcloth, monies received for the poor, and monies paid out to the poor. A number of marriages on the page can be at different prices - I guess based on ability to pay.
1/6 is the correct format, for "old money". Generally read as one and six, in full terms, one shilling and six pence. Old money officially went out in February 1971 when the UK money was decimalised. 1/6 became 7½ pence (new pence). As my age was in single figures at the time, my memories of old money are few.
All the best,
AndrewP

I feel that way too...about the people here. What I can help with is limited as I am in Australia, but sometimes there is something I have managed to learn along the way and pass on.
I looked at your map, and I see it wasn't all that far from Paisley by today's standards, but probably a hike in my ggggg grandmother's day!
The site "Hidden Glasgow" has a thread about Roughmussel, mostly discussing its recent history, but there is a bit about it being a farm at one time.
Thanks again!
Nina

Thanks Andrew! I thought it meant that, but wasn't sure!
I just found a great map for Roughmussel using OldMaps and the twon Hurlet. It doesn't search for Roughmussel but it IS on the same page. I wouldn't have found it if not for you Rockford so THANKS!

Sometimes there are two entries for marriages as the proclamations were made in both the groom's and the brides parish.
Aileach
Looking for Gardiner, Napper, Rossenblatz/Ross

Yes, thank you Aileach...this seems to be the case here.
I have that lovely warm glow you get when you get back a further generation. Yes, it IS only ONE of the parents...but it is still a good feeling anyway!

If you zoom in on the Gd section of this old map
http://www.nls.uk/maps/early/542.html you'll find them.
Regards,
Annette M
Just seen that you've found an old map Nina.
