Hi
Thanks for that Lesley. Have not managed to find any of mine on there but will look more closely.

Hi Liz
Just double checked on my OPR births for Roseneath. They seem to have been born in Miln of Rahaen, which is just about Meikle Rahane.
I think they are related as is a Humphrey who married a Mary McQuilkin.

Scottish Execution
Hi Anne
Yes Humphrey is another son of John and Christian. Humphrey is a common Colquhoun name, so I am assuming it comes through Christian's line. I have checked with the SNA online catalogue and there is an early murder in dumbartonshire with 4 names listed, the main one appears to be a John McFarlane. I have e-mailed them to find out how much a photocopy would be. I will not be able to go to Edinburgh for weeks yet so a search would have to wait, but if a copy is not too expensive I would not mind taking the chance on this one. So it looks like we do have a connection, however distant. Funny I already have a connection, but we were not really aware how until recently. We knew that my dad's brothers wife was also related to my mum's family - she was always aware there was a distant relationship, but not sure how. Turns out that Malcolm and Sally's eldest daughter is the connection, so that makes another McFarlane. We could possibly get a chance to chat at the Irish day!!!

Hi Liz,
I've gone through my copy of the Scottish Crime and Punishment, which reprints the Scots Black Kalendar, a hundred years of executions in Scotland from 1800 to 1910, and can only find the Hans McFarlane execution. The details of that case don't match up in any way to your story I'm afraid.
My own ggg grandmother was murdered with an axe in 1866 at her brother's farm, and if you can find your case to be true, there is a heck of a lot you should be able to find. I've transcribed a great deal of the documents surrounding the trial of the culprit in my case, who ended up being found non-proven at Perth. These can be viewed at my website at http://chrispatonscotland.tripod.com/id48.html - the case was known as the Mount Stewart Murder, and I'm currently trying to write the story up as a book!
Good luck with your search..
Chris

Thank you Chris
That was fascinating. You really have done a lot of work. I am sure you will be successful with the book, if the web-site is anything to go by. What a lot of information. I hope I am as lucky.
