Hi Jean,

I agree, John Gordon is John, and definitely not Joseph. I think we have to assume that to be a transcription error on FreeCEN.

As for James Willox / Wilton, Having seen the different names offered between FreeCEN and yourself, I favour Willox. In fairness, If FreeCEN had not transcibed that name as Willox, I am not sure that I would have seen Willox there.

John Gordon

After seeing that his name was definitely John i searched the 1841 census for Monquhitter and found a John Gordon there with a lady named Ann Alexander,this was maybe his mother as on the 1851 census it has his place of birth as Monquhitter.He was aged 4 so it could well be the same one.

I see James Willox on the census.

He comes up on IGI as born in Ellon 27 May 1827 to Alex Willox and Catherine Robertson. and there are another 9 Willoxes too. 8 to the same parents.

Unfortunately John Gordon's birth isnt on the IGI so its impossible to know who his parents were.
