OPR MARRIAGE

Post by frances » Wed Sep 29, 2010 4:35 pm

Subsequent documentation makes me think that a bride was a widow .Would it be the norm to state whether the bride was a widow on a proclamation of marriage dated 1840?

Frances,

My 3x great grandmother remarried after the death of her husband. The OP proclamation of marriage states that she was the widow of the late Alexander xxxxxx This marriage took place in 1840. This proclamation is also the only proof I have that Alexander died.

Regards,

Ina

Hi Frances

My guess would be that it will depend very much on the parish and the session clerk of that parish at the time. I have an example in my tree of one helpful clerk who did state that the bride was a widow back in 1780 in good old South Leith, but I reckon it will vary greatly between parishes.

Best wishes
Lesley
