Help needed please Dumfries area

Post by kenspeckle » Thu Apr 28, 2011 2:09 pm

I have from Scotland's People baptisms for the children of My GGG Grandads sister
Does anyone know whether those places are farms or estates ? does anyone know why I cant find biths in Troqueer for the 2 daughters ? any help at all will be very much appreciated as I think I have run out of places to look regards lesley in tasmania

Barbara Graham 16 Nov 1779 parents John Graham & Philadelphia Rodick in "Roberthill" Drysedale Dumfries
Anne Graham 2 Mar 1783 parents John Graham & Phillis Roddic in "Limekilns " Annan Dumfries
William Graham 16 Aug 1794 says to John Graham & Philie Rodock in "Hallheaths" Lochmaben

John Graham was noted as a Farmer on his other 2 daughters deaths Phillis & Euphemia b in Troqueer Kirkubright according to Census but no births found at all ?
as My GGG Grandad John Roddick had 2 of his daughters named Phillis & Euphemia Roddick they also never married lived in Dumfries both were teachers I can only find th birth of one Phillis at Milnhead in 1799 (John Roddick was a Farm Manger /Land Factor at Milnhead Estate )

I took a punt and searched in English Census for a Phillis Graham as its an unusual name in Dumfries and found her Phillis Graham in England as a FS 1841 and as a Nurse 1851 at least I think its her nothing anywhere in 1861 nor for sister Euphemia till 1871 where she appears in Dunmfries along with Phillis

Phillis Graham b 1802 Troqueer Kirkudbright died age 81 1880 4 Bridge Street Dumfries (needlewoman)
& sister Euphemia Graham b 1809 died age 80 1889 at 2 Ainslie Terrace Dumfries (Housekeeper)
neither girls married
I got the 2 death certs which confirms daughters of John Graham a farmer & Phillis Roddick the surname for mother on Euphemias is not readable but does not look like Roddick the informant was Ann Hanna niece.....I am not certain but I think that the sister Barbara married a John Hannah in 1878 she could be daughter of sister Barbara ? (This sometimes happens that informant gives wrong name as possibly they just dont know and also maybe were not expecting that question )

the address on Scottish census 1881 is 4 Bridge Street Dumfries
FHL Film 0224047 GRO Ref Volume 821 EnumDist 5 Page 22

1871 Census they were both living together at 72 English Street Dumfries noted as Dressmakers I have not found Euphemia prior to 1871
I can find nothing in Memorials of St Michaels, no wills ,no Kirk sessions
there are so many John and William Grahams and I feel I am on the verge of connecting my Roddick ancestors I am hoping that maybe someone will recognise the names above That is also researching that surname

I have written to The Scottish Genealogy Society as it looks as if they have a set of papers which I found googling Graham and Hallheaths
GRAHAM 3 DFS. 1763-1948+ T C 43 pages
Dealing with the family in Lochmaben and the Grahams of Broomhill and Halleaths.

also this about Limekilns what caught my eye was the 1790 birth of a Philadelphia Ann at a time when my Philadelphia known as Phillis and her daughter Ann would have been living on this Farm /Estate

784. JAMES LAWRIE, licensed by Presbytery of Penpont, 5th Aug. 1778; presented by George III. in February, and ordained 2nd September 1784; died 26th March 1799, in his 47th year. He married 4th April 1785, Rachel (died 1st June 1826), daughter of Adam Carlyle of Limekilns, and had issue— Adam, born 21st Jan. 1786; Rachel Douglas, born 4th June 1787 (married —- Wilkin, farmer, Tinwald Shaws); William James, born 30th Sept. 1788; Philadelphia Ann, born 21st May, and died 1st June 1790; Thomas, born 27th April 1793; James, born 20th May 1796.

Back again Lesley,

Adam Carlyle of Limekilns, b1724/5, married Philadelphia Carruthers of Holmains, which I think makes her grandmother of the Philadelphia Ann who died..

Hi alan

Thank you so very much for your helpful info (somehow I missed the notification email ? so apologies for the time it has taken for my reply )

That is also very good info on Philadelphia so I can get rid of any notions that My Philadelphia was the person that Philadelphia Ann was named after it is an unusual name at that period of time which seems to be full on with Janets & Elizabeths

I am still working on The Roddick families as are a few others scattered worldwide trying to connect the families at the earlier end but may never happen as so many of the same name in the same area most probably related but no real way of proving but I will keep looking again many thanks I always look forward to your contributions on Talking Scot

best regards lesley
