I downloaded an OPR birth record from 1720 Clackmannan. After the given name of each child on the page is a term that looks like Cautl or Coult. The T is crossed over the entire word which in most old records suggests that it is an abbreviation. I suspect that it is a latin term that means "surname is the same as the father's surname." Does anyone know the correct meaning of this term and what the latin word is?
Thank you.

Re: Need interpretation of term in OPR birth record
Hi Richard. Is it possibly Lawfl. short for lawful i.e. legitimate? You quite often get OPR baptism records which state something like Jane lawful daughter (or lawfl. dtr.) to/of Alexander Brown and Elspeth Smith his wife/spouse.
