Hi everybody.
I am need of some assistance for James Beattie.
The only thing that I know is
1/. He was born c 1834 to William Beattie & Janet Agnes Callander in Kirkbean.
2/. He married Margaret Holmes.

I would like to know the date of birth,& the date & place of marriege.

Many thanks in advance

The marriage record, - James was quite old at the date of marriage, - is waiting for you on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk .

Just do a marriage cross-check on the surnames BEATTIE and HOLMES, - don't bother with the given names, as Margaret is shown slightly differently anyway.

Although 6 of his siblings appear via a parents search using IGI at www.familysearch.org it looks like his record was not made or has not survived.

Margaret's death is also easy to find using the married female cross-check search at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk , ann there should be several possible census entries, except where are they in 1881 ?

David,

Strange thing is that I can't find any of them in 1881.

Maybe not so strange. Half of the 1881 census for Dumfries (EDs 13-27) and also all of Dunscore is missing - and hence not on the LDS CDs.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Baldy

The first marriage was in 1861 or earlier. In the 1861 census you'll find James in the household of his father, shown as a Widower. Even if his first wife died in the period 1856 to 1860, the marital status only of the deceased is shown, i.e. no name of the spouse, and in 1856 to 1858 the only index entry is under the name reported, i.e. no cross check search is possible.

If the marriage was pre-1855 then there's no guarantee of an OPR entry for the marriage or the proclamation ("crying") of the banns.
