Interpreting a Testament Dative 1760s

Post by Wmarj » Tue Mar 11, 2025 3:44 am

Hi,

I have a Testament Dative which I bought & downloaded from Scotland's People. I can read almost all of it except for a few abbreviations but I need a bit of help from someone who can explain what each part means as it has to do with bonds, sums, debts etc and I'm finding it a bit confusing.

Is there someone who can help me please? Is it ok to attach the downloaded Scotland's People documents as PDF or does that breach a copyright?

Thank you .

Have you had a look at SP's help page?

https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/scottish-handwriting

there's a section on legal words,
https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/scot ... blem-words
that may help you figure it out on your own.

If not by all means attach the problem areas and we'll see if a fresh set of eyes can help.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply. I'll try and find a Family History place or Genealologist who can explain the contents of the testament dative to me.

Sometimes just knowing what words are/were used in these legal documents can help.
I had to have a dictionary handy when doing my Father's legal affairs.

I'm not sure what files can be uploaded here, jpeg are Ok, unsure of PDF's.
