John Ruddoch Chelsea Pensioner

Post by Youngster » Sat Aug 23, 2025 2:23 am

I have been trying to find an ancestor, John Ruddoch (Ruddock/Ruddach/Riddoch) born Ardmeallie, Marnoch, Banffshire 1732 who served in the military, 1st Regiment of Foot from 1755 for 22 years. He was then transferred to the Independent Company of Invalids at Fort George, Inverness-shire as he had lost an eye in combat. He was awarded a pension by the Chelsea Hospital. He was 'demobbed' in 1802 when this company was disbanded. He then disappears. I have been trying to find him for nearly 20 years through every avenue that I can think of. Scotland's People, Ancestry, FindMyPast, National Archives Kew (where I found his demob record but that is all that I have of him other than his baptism record), local historical societies, Family Search, other genealogical websites. No luck.

His daughter, Margaret, married a fellow-soldier, John McManus born Kilmore, Co Cavan, 1746) at Fort George c 1798 (no marriage record to date, no birth record for Margaret, no mother for Margaret). She was born at Petty, Inverness c 1778 according to subsequent census records. Her father, John Ruddoch, was sent to Fort George in 1777. She may have been born out of wedlock, John may not have married her mother as I have yet to find a marriage record for him.

I do have John and Margaret's son, John McManus's, baptism record for 1799 at Ardersier, near Fort George, possibly baptised at the church at Ardersier a small village near Fort George. John McManus the younger, grew up in Elgin, Moray, married and had a family.

Can anyone help with finding John Ruddoch after 1802. He would have been aged 70 by this date. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
