Hi Dennis,
The 1851 census for Dumfries shows a Sarah S Bell, aged 15, living with Jon Irving, Landed Proprietor aged 50 and his wife Elizabeth aged 55 at Sandhills, Annan. She is decribed as his niece and her place of birth is England.
Jonathan Irving was still at Sandhills in 1881. Sarah Bell's widower, William Richardson and three of their chidren were living there with him. Entry below;

Jonathan Irving died at Sandhills on 26th May 1881, aged 84. He was the son of James Irving, Corn Miller and Margaret Burnett (says Birrel on his christening entry in IGI). He was the widower of Elizabeth Johnstone.The informant of the death was William Richardson, nephew.
Can't see how Sarah Bell fits in as Jonathan's niece, but the English birthplace does fit with the Yorkshire marriage that Catriona found. I think it is more likely that Jonathan is related to Andrew Bell than Sarah Savill, but could be wrong. It is possible that the family link is through Elizabeth Johnstone (Jonathan's wife) but can't find any more information on her.
Hope this helps a bit,
Isobel (Edinburgh)
