Hi there,
I've been searching in the OPR birth records on Scotland's People, but I can't find any record of Charle's Sturgeon, or at least the one I am looking for. He married Jean Hyslop on August 1st, 1765 at New Abbey in Kirkcudbright so I can only assume he was born somewhere after c.1725, because his son William Sturgeon was born in 1783.
I also can't find any record of his birth on the IGI, is there any other way of tracking the fellow down?
Thanks for your help.
Verity

No sign of Father Charles but do you have this one?
STURGON
Female
Event(s):
Birth:
Christening: 17 MAR 1777 Troqueer, Kirkcudbright, Scotland
Parents:
Father: CHARLES STURGON Mother: JEAN HESLEP
Messages:
Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record. The source records are usually arranged chronologically by the birth or christening date.
I expect she died very young , as there is no christian name.

WilmaM,
Thanks for that, the variations on the name 'sturgeon' and 'hyslop' are interesting. Also, it seems strange that the record is for a christening but the child doesn't have a name yet. William was born in Torqueer too. I wonder if it will be of any use to have a look around cemetaries in Troqueer.
Thanks again for the information!

Hullo Verity
It might be worth your while having a look at Hugh Wallis's site.

There is a list of Sturgeons born in Troqueer around the period when you think Charles would have been born. Only girls though, which makes one wonder if the boys were not recorded on the IGI. There have been other parishes where only the girls were recorded.
Do have a look too at the list of mariages on the Hugh Wallis site, for the appropriate years, in Troqueer.
All the best

Hi Verity,
I have done quite a lot of research on the Sturgeon families in Dumfries and Kirkcudbright. I believe that your Charles may have been the son of Charles Sturgeon and Margaret Hunter who married in Dumfries in 1743. My interest was in the descendents of another of their sons ,William born 1745.
Do you have proof that William born 1783 was the son of Charles and Jean (Hyslop) as I have never come across this anywhere. Was it this William who later married Jean Paterson?
I would be interested in any info. you have on the Sturgeon family.
Regards,
Isobel (Edinburgh)

Isobel! Thank you so much for that information, it would certainly be a breakthrough if my Charles was the son of Charles Sturgeon and Margaret Hunter!isobelc wrote:Hi Verity,

I have a death certificate extract for William Sturgeon born 1783 (and indeed married to Jean Paterson) from 1864 which lists him as the widower of 'jane' Paterson, and his parents as Charles Sturgeon (agricultural labourer) and Jean Hyslop. However, William's age is 77 which makes his birth date a bit out, but I figure they may have just got his age wrong (something I am finding all the time) because everything else matches up. Oh, and he died in the district of Dalbeattie.
His son was Thomas Sturgeon b. 1822 d. 1914, married to Isabella McVey. Their son James Sturgeon b. 1850 in Buittle married Jeanie Farish, and their son - William Sturgeon b. 1885 was my great grandfather. Technically my name should be Sturgeon but unfortunately there was a small case of illegitimacy on William Sturgeon's part, hehe.
Hope this info is anyway useful.

Hello Verity and Isobel
Nothing to lose here.... STURGEON is very near and dear to my heart it being my maiden name. The origin of my direct line has dead ended in County Down, Killinchy area. Earliest record being the birth of Robert STURGEON to William STURGEON and Mary STEVENSON about 1808. This Robert married in Killinchy in 1834 and came over to Dailly after 1846 and before 1849. The family has now scattered around the globe and with the collaboration of several new found cousins we've got them pretty well documented to current day. We sure would love to find an earlier link to Scotland though. If you ever discover a son who wandered off to Ireland.......
Best wishes
Jean
