Hi all,
I am having difficulty finding a death entry for an ancestor called Agnes McCouat/Mc Cowat/ McQuoit - too many variations are probably NOT helping!
According to my information, she was probably born around 1781 in New Kilpatrick, Dumbarton as her christening record for April 1 of that year is on the IGI.
In 1800 she married Robert Easdon in Erskine Renfrew and together they had five children that I know of; David, John, Robert, Agnes and William, all born in Erskine. William, the youngest was born in 1811.
I believe by 1820 Robert had married again to an Elizabeth Muir (and I can't find a record of this anywhere either) so I am speculating that Agnes McCouat must have died between 1811 and 1820.
Can anyone please help me find some sort of indication that she did indeed die, as it will help me clear up this family branch a great deal!
Thanks for reading,
Nina

The problem that you have here is that compulsory civil registration of BMD did not start until 1855, plus the facts that the Established Church of Scotland Old Parochial Registers don't contain anything like all of the records of their parishioners and that death was regarded as the much less important event to record anyway.
If you are fortunate there might be an MI, - monumental inscription = tombstone inscription.

Hi Nina
I'm guessing you think she might have died in the Erskine area and the MIs for this area would seem to have been published, but of course there is no guarantee that a grave stone exists for your Agnes. Ideally you need to find someone who has this publication or access to it, so that they can check for you.
Renfrewshire MI - Vol.1. Pre-1855. A5, 195pp. (Edited by JF & S Mitchell )
Price: £10.00
Arthurlie, Bridge of Weir, Cathcart, Eaglesham, Eastwood, Erskine, Gourock, Greenock, Houston, Inchinnan, Inverkip, Johnstone, Kilbarchan and Killellan.

or
http://www.gwsfhs.org.uk/publications.asp
Perhaps a library local to the area would have it and could do a look-up for you?
libraries.els@renfrewshire.gov.uk
Or perhaps the Renfrewshire FHS might be able to help?

Hope you find what you are looking for.
Best wishes

Pre 1855 MIs
Hi Nina & Lesley,
I've had a look at the pre 1855 MIs for Renfrewshire, but no mention of Agnes (or Robert).
And not in "Pre 1855 Deaths in West Renfrewshire" by Lesley Couperwhite either.
Not looking too good at all for finding a death date.

Thanks so much for trying everyone. I am also thinking Robert and Agnes may have died in Dumbartonshire. Only a guess but other family members were known to be living there.
I wonder if someone could also look for Elizabeth Easdon ms Muir. She must have died before 1848, IF the Robert Easdon she married was the same as the one I am looking for. He went on to marry a Jane McGowan in 1848.
Thanks again!
