Hi,
I have a Sarah Perkins c1816-1873 married to a George Gallpen c?-?. They married in Dirleton, East Lothian, Scotland on May 5th, 1849.
I'd like to know if there would be a record of the marriage? George does not appear in any census.

Hi Dennis
Looking at the IGI there seem to be two entries for this marriage:
SARAH PERKINS
Marriages:
Spouse: GEORGE GALLPEN
Marriage: 05 MAY 1849 Dirleton, East Lothian, Scotland
M117054 1820 - 1854
and
SARAH PERKINS
Marriages:
Spouse: GEORGE GALLPEN
Marriage: 06 MAY 1849 Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland
M117099 1820 - 1854
The batch numbers would suggest that this marriage should appear in both Dirleton & Haddington OPRs - so worth a look at the microfilms. I'd guess the bride was from one Parish, groom from the other. Now what you have to hope for [-o< is that one or other (or ideally both) of these Parishes had diligent, consciencious persons who wrote detailed marriage records!!
Best of luck with it.

Greetings Lesley,
From what I have tripped over so far is that the Gallpen club was from IOW turf. Sarah was born in England, but I don't know how she would have come into contact w/ George nor why, it seems, there is no accounting for him after they wed.

Hi Dennis
George Gallpen & Sarah and Daughter Mary Jane appear in 1851 Census in Haddington. He is an Innkeeper.
Sarah and Mary Jane appear in 1861 in Dunbar, she is down as Head. You will find them on Freecen. I just put in 1851, East Lothian & Gallpen, and 1861, East Lothian & Gallpen. Hope this helps.
