George Gallpen of Dirleton .....

Post by Dennis » Thu Dec 01, 2005 12:33 am

Hi,

According to the transcript of the marriage of George Gallpen & Sarah Perkins:

Dirleton (Ref 705/4)
"George Gallpen in this Parish and Sarah Perkins in the Parish of Haddington gave in their names for Proclamation 5th May 1849, and were regularly proclaimed, and married".

I can find no other Gallpens in this area, or how long he was residing there or where there. He was born in England but who knows where? Census of 1851 has him as an innkeeper.

Hullo Dennis

Have you been able to find the Gallpens on SP? There are so few of them that it may be well worth your while having a look at all the entries:

Census 1861 2; Statuary Death Register 2 ; OPRs 2

Wonder where the name originates from. There aren't many around in the British Isles on the IGI, in fact there are very few worldwide it seems.

All the best
Catriona

Hi Catriona,

It seems that the Gallpen name is quite common on the Isle of Wight, but I have nothing to connect him to there in terms of a paper trail.

George Gallpen Innkeeper

According to the archives of The Scotsman Mr. Gallpen became the proprietor of the Black Bull Inn in Haddington shortly after marrying Sarah Perkins in 1849. Interestingly, Sarah's mom was an Innkeeper.

Sometimes spelt "Galpin" as in the great musical instrument collector and researcher, Canon Francis W. Galpin (1858-1945). I presume it was once the same name.

Greetings Thrall,

Yes, it seems that the 2nd 'l' is sometimes added, and sometimes dropped :)
