Can anyone explain these notations in an OPR death? .....

Post by LesleyB » Tue Dec 13, 2005 11:54 pm

I was looking through the deaths for Kettle Parish today (435/5) and although I've noticed this before in passing I've never really looked at what is written there too closely. I've uploaded a random example page -
http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... p?pos=-320 - there isn't anyone on it I'm interested in but it was a good clear page.

The notations I'm puzzled by are similar to this:
435/5 Deaths, Kettle Parish p. 67
Nov 10th 1758 James Gulen in Pitlessie, aged about 40 h:g:7:0:0 from d:d:f:g:6:0:0 from E [or S, not sure]:d:l:g:2:2:~
Is it some sort of measurement, either to do with depth of burial or precise position of burial? Or is it something to do with income for the church from mortcloth hire or other dues payable at the time of death?
Can anyone please explain what this is all about?

best wishes
Lesley

I can't see it as being mortcloth info, - there's too much info, and many of the "amounts" are very expensive, even although it's tempting to see the figures as L:s:d.

Which can only leave the location of the grave, depth, number already interred, which would make sense as two co-ordinates would be needed to fix the location, with the other set of figures for other information.
