Can anyone help me with the Birth of Peter MacPhie/McPhie,McPhee/Mcfie
By the time it got down to me it had become McPhee(my middlename)
On Peters marriage Certificate in1866, he married Janet MacKinnon, sometimes Jessie.
His parents are Donald MacPhie and Peggy M.S Munro
The same parents on his D.C in 1919, all events in Kilmuir, Inverness.
He was 30 in 1866 and 84 in 1919, which makes his Birth date around 1835,1836.
He gives in Census records his Birth Place as Kilmuir.
I tried OPR putting in surname but no christian name and came up with only one Peter born in 1828 to John McPhie and Catherine mcDonald.
Donald MacPhie and Margaret Munro had 2 daughters Mary & Catherine both according to OPR born 22/02/1845.
I hope this makes sense to someone, who might have some idea where I can find Peter's birth.
I Hope I posted this in the correct area as it is my first time. Please feel free to growl if it is wrong
Thanks wini

Welcome to TalkingScot.
It looks like Peter birth/baptism was never recorded in the Established Church of Scotland records, or it was but the record hasn't survived. When you write "OPR" I assume that you mean ScotlandsPeople as opposed to IGI, as the on-line version of the latter, not the version on the Scottish Churches CD at LDS Family History Centres or SP, is known to lack many male records..........
Have you seen the 1881 death in Kilmuir for "Mary" MacFIE, widow of Donald, Farmer, parents' surname MUNRO, informant son Peter ?.............
But looks like Donald died before 1855.
And how about the 1881 census:-
Census Place: Kilmuir, Inverness, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203426 GRO Ref Volume 112-1 EnumDist 2 Page 7

Cathrine MC PHIE 6 m F Balgarvan, Inverness, Scotland

Margaret MC PHIE W 80 F Kilmuir, Inverness, Scotland

It has to be worth a look at the film to see if "Porneskitag" is a correct transcription. Since every other census gives Kilmuir, this may be a placename in the parish..................

Thanks for your help. I do have the Census records. In 1871 ther is only Charles & John of course. His death Certificate is signed by Anne and Janet/Jessie's death certificate is signed byJonathan.
There is a paucity of names in that family.
My grandmother must have been the Ann but she was know as Annie and her death certificate in 1947 shows her being 74 years of age.
I missed the 1881 death of Mary but will check it out.
Yes my information is mainly from the Scotlands People web site although
I have used the IGI.
Thank you very much
I have more queries coming hope that is O.K.

Hi Wini, A question first then a wee observation.
Q. Do twins run in the family? Or are we just looking at a double christening for mary and Catherine.
Observation... Do the parent search again for Donald McPhee and Margaret Munro on the I.G.I. Click on the Batch.No. then enter the Christian name of PETER only. You'll get 2 results. One of the mammies is called Margaret Munro. Next do a parent search for Donald McDonald and Margaret Munro, and you'll find someone else was christened on the same day as Peter. Double Christening or twins??
My whole point being maybe Margaret Munro was married before. The age for Peter would just fit.
The 1851 census when it comes online maybe help.

Re: Porneskitag
Hello Wini,
there are two Kilmuirs on Skye. The better known one is near to Dunvegan on the north-west coast. The other one is a few miles north of Uig on the most northerly part of Skye. Adjacent to the latter Kilmuir is Borneskitaig.
Regards,
John

Whoops And there was me thinking that this was a typical 1881 mis-transcription !!sporran wrote:Hello Wini,

Thank you again for help.
The kilmuir is via Uig
No twins in family.
Mary Macfie death in 1881 looks very likely. The 1881 census was on the 3rd April and the death on twenty somethingth that I can't quite read.
The other thing is that her mother was MARY Munro and I have found a couple of other places where there have been errors like this.
e.g. a Grandmothers M.S. instead of a mothers
When is the 1851 Census due to come on line?
Now real advice needed. Do I persevere with this or let it go for the moment and get back to TS with more problems?
Thanks again

Depends how important the line is to you, and how many other lines are awaiting your attentionwini wrote:Now real advice needed. Do I persevere with this or let it go for the moment and get back to TS with more problems?
