Deaths on OPR .....

Post by wini » Tue Jan 03, 2006 1:42 am

I am sure this question has been asked before, but can someone tell me why there are only Births & Marriages on OPR and no Death records

Because the only important sacraments as far as the Established Church of Scotland was concerned were baptisms and marriage (or proclamation of the banns).

For that reason over one third of OPRs contain no information at all on deaths or the income from the hire of the mortcloth.

Of those parishes where there are death/mortcloth records, very few have unbroken records over the whole period for which an OPR exists.

Deaths on OPR's

Post by Linda » Fri Apr 14, 2006 10:24 am

The General Registers of Scotland have for some reason known only to them not transcribed deaths before 1855. This of course is very frustrating for us and the only way that I know of to find these deaths would be to go into The National Archives of Scotland and trawl through the church records. CH2 is the reference number for the volumes.

This I'm afraid would take you forever. Also at the moment, the NAS are in the middle of a new project, ie the new Family History Centre and seats for researchers are limited. If you are thinking of going in, my advise to you is give them a call and find out when their quietest period is. These volumes are kept in the search rooms at 2 Princes Street and not at the West Register House

Linda
Names that I am researching:- Gordon; Guthrie; Reaper; Spence; Maver; Anderson; Edwards; and many many more.

Hi Linda

CH2 - only if your family were established Church of Scotland.

A whole bunch of my lot were not, they were serious "dissenters" - strong supporters of the Free Church, to the extent that they were "warned out of their land" on Whitsunday 1843 and had to move Parishes in a hurry! I'm almost sure it was a deliberate move ...just to make my tracing them more interesting!

Anyway, for those whose relatives were awkward whotsits like mine , there are also the following refs at NAS:
  • CH3 Dissenting Churches e.g. The Free Church from 1843 \:D/ (a wee cheer for my awkward lot!)
    CH10 Quaker Records
    CH11 Methodist Records
    CH12 Episcopal Records
    CH13 United Free Church Records
and of course there are the records for Catholic churches too....

Best wishes
Lesley

Scottish National Death and Burial Index
Undertaken by S.A.F.H.S. with the member societies and the G.R.O. for Scotland, the aim is to index all recorded pre-1855 deaths and burials in Scotland. The index for the High Church of Glasgow 1699-1854, with over 160,000 entries, will shortly be available for sale on CD-ROM. It can also be searched on computer at our research centre.
Similarly the indexes for Barony, Govan and Gorbals should be published this year. Work continues on the records of Calton and Ramshorn & Blackfriars.
