OPR I cried.....

Post by joette » Mon Jan 16, 2006 4:37 pm

At last my FHC has finally reopened & so Sat found me there.First success was seeing an old friend helping there.
I had a few films I wanted to see but thought I would have to order & thought "Why bother you have the info anyway"-the date of my paternal 5x times Great-Grandparents marriage & the birth of three of their children.I was also hoping for Perthshire 1841/51 Census which I started off with. Not much luck there but fascinating reading & the cost of a marriage & the cost of sitting on the admonishment stool!!(my Granny sat on one c1918)Might have found my Maternal GGGrandmother but as she had no other family with her on the Census was difficult to verify.Good reading though.
They had the films of the marriage & I thought give it a go.Well I trawled through & thought nothing here & then I rechecked the date.1789 & I had been looking at later dates so scrowled back to Nov.1789 & there it was & what info! OK not a lot but I had tears running down my face.
They married in Old Greyfriars Parish -I have actually been to the cemetery there & nothing to do with Bobby! he was an Ostler(although it looked like Oystler) her father Peter & a Day Labourer from Peebles. Both of the Parish but I think they were trying to save a couple of pounds!
So only a little extra info but gave me an insight as to perhaps why most of their children are born in different places.
Hoping for similiar info re their children & also from the Perthshire films xXXXXXXXXXX(Fingers crossed.)

Joette, well done. Your super patience has paid off. At least this time you were crying with happiness! It can all be a bit of a roller coaster of emotions and I have been moved to tears several times but I think it does us good to think about the lives some of our ancestors must have lived.
Here's too many more successful finds.

Isn't it lovely to make a find Joette !

We must have been sitting in Paisley library at about the same time as you were doing your trawl but for us it was the 1851 census. 7 people living in 1 room with a 10 year old out to work. The father, a skilled shoemaker just over from Ireland, working in a menial job in the mill. His elusive wife, not to be found on later records, - why? Some enumerator had such bad writing that her name was illegible and even scotlandspeople had got it wrong.
Oh for a time machine to go back and sort some of the recorders out. They were employed for their literacy - PHaaHH!! and other naughty words.

So... Have you planned you next square eyed session yet?
Self inflicted punishment - till you make a real find

Yes i'm going next Sat. they have some of my films by then although not likely but I can do some other stuff there like check Temple Ready which has stuff not aviable online I dont think will have to check.
I know it is so sad when you hear/read some of the stuff that our ancestors endured. It is annonying when the info is incorrect but having been a Census enumerator myself on one occasion I know what a tough job it is.Some people think you are a snoop & will report them to the "Buroo" or that the Government is keeping tabs on them for some sinister purpose. Also some people may have been unable to spell their own name & the enumerator would have had to guess. Also an accent different to your own may have been difficult to understand.

Hi Joette

I wasn't knocking the content. Just the writing. It was so flowery it was impossible to read the actual letters. Ordinary names were not too bad but this was a EUPHEMIA and it had more curls than a home perm. Sorry, you wouldn't remember them!

Russell

PS Some enumerators had glorious writing, The kind you would hang on your wall as an art-form.

My local Family History Center is contained in two small rooms which encourages sharing. If I come across exquisite, artistic, artwork, a small group will come over and we all stop and admire the enumerator's skill. To be able to read these clear and well-maintained pages from 1841 is awesome.

That's one of the few names we don't have sorry. All the Scotts were born in Glencorse,Penicuik too.Unless it is one of the sons of my Great-uncles as I haven't tracked them as it is such a common name.
