James Grant, Inveravon, Banff .....

Post by emdee » Sat Mar 25, 2006 8:54 pm

Can anyone with access to Inveravon registers help?

The IGI has 2 entries for the birth of James Grant.
The first names him as James Grant or Black, the christening date is 27 November 1788, parents Wm. Grant & Janet Black.
The second entry gives the same baptism date, names him as James Grant and the parents William Grant & Jean Black.
I would like to know what each of these entries says exactly, just to clear up any confusion as to whether William & Jean were married, and why there are two entries.
I know that William Grant was a Butler, and hope that a place is given in the actual entry.

Hi emdee
..and a warm welcome to Talking Scot. :D

I'm not sure where you are located but you should be able to order the OPR films from your nearest LDS Family History Centrefor a small fee , if you are nowhere near Edinburgh, and then you could see the full wording of the OPR entries.

best wishes

Hi Lesley,

Thanks - the problem is my nearest Family History Centre is even further away than Edinburgh!

One day I'll get to one or the other - if I don't die of curiosity in the meantime.

Hi Emdee
OK.... :-k what about contacting/joining the Family History Society for the area?
http://www.anesfhs.org.uk/
Still might be cheaper than that trip to Edinburgh, ....and you wouldn't be in mortal danger in the meantime!

Best wishes

Hi EmDee

If youlook at your ywo IGI entries are they submissions or extracts ?
An extract is taken directly from the written records and , for a birth, will have a Batch Number on the lower left side. Submissions are rather like someones best guesses and have no number or perhaps a film number on them. They are submitted to the LDS for religious reasons not secular ones like genealogy which need to be exact.
Accept an extract as possibly quite accurate and use it as the basis for further investigations preferably looking at, or downloading OPR records.
Scotlandspeople hope to have the OPR images on-line at some point but that is in the future. If you are near Glasgow most OPR films are available at the Mitchell (don't know if they have them for up north though)

Thanks again Lesley & Russell.

I have just managed to get this far with James Grant since the 1851 census went online at Scotland's People. I hope they will be making progress with putting OPR images online - that would be great.

The IGI entries are extracts, not submissions. My next step will be to get a transcript from Scots Origins. I think that would work out cheaper than paying the train fare to Edinburgh!

James lawful son to James Black in Waraich Inveravon and wife Janet Black was baptised 13 February 1783.

Witnesses:-

I looked at 1788 and the was nothing for him in that year looked ad at few years after and then I worked forward and foun this entry.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for taking the trouble to give me this information. I know so very little about the family at this time that any information I can get helps to build up the picture.

Thanks again.
