I am wondering about a Wilson family that is in the census, but not in the OPR, pre 1855. Does that mean they were not church-going types and didn't have children baptised or married in the church? Then, were the marriages and births registered somewhere else? How common was that?
Thanks,
Barbara

Hi Barbara
Off the top of my head, several possible reasons spring to mind:
1. The family were members of the "free church" (split from main Church of Scotland occurred in 1843)
2. The family were Catholic
3. The family were Methodists, Jewish, or any other church which is not the established church.
4. They may have been in an area where the recording of such events was poor or the events were recorded but have since been lost/demaged/destroyed.
5. THey may not be on the IGI - not everything is.
Can you give some examples of names, dates & area and we might be able to shed some light on it.
Best wishes
Lesley

Lesley,
I actually have the census which shows the names and ages. I was very surprised that they are not in the OPR. I have my doubts about their interest in some other religion. They were obviously poor and the father is not on the census list in 1851 or 1861. Maybe he traveled a lot?! I'm not very hopeful trying to find him or his parents. I have what I think is the marriage for John Wilson and Ann Gibson 26 Feb 1841. He was born in Ayrshire and she is from Glasgow. I have her father's name, John Gibson, because he is with the family in 1851 census. Most of the children were born in Dalry.
Thank you,
Barbara

I see John and Ann living in Dalry in 1841 with neighbours Gibson.
I can't answer your question re IGI. The children didn't need to be registered but it is very unusual for the marriage not to be made in the church.
Are some records missing?
Do you have the 1841 Freecen Census details?
I could have a look at the OPR film when I'm next at The Mitchell library.
Regards,
Annette

Hello Annette,
I am sorry! I found the marriage on Ayrshireroots.com (where someone has listed all the Wilsons in Scotland from the OPR). I must have been a little careless and sleepy last night when looking for the marriage, because it is there in Dalry. Not the children's names, however.
From what you said I could presume that it may not be unusual for the children not to be baptised, but marriages should be there. Is that about right?
Thank you for offering to check on the marriage. You need not bother.
