I've been looking at the OPRs for Old Monkland, my ancestor and some siblings were born at Sikeside, but I can't find it on Old Maps or the OS. Maybe I'm not doing it right. Did people in the 1770s move around much? There are 4 children on the IGI, but the mothers name isn't given on the OPR so I am going by the place of birth to match these people up and I'm wondering if they moved and that is the reason we only have 4 children. How would I know if they moved?
I'm thinking with shipping that the price of the OS map is kind of steep, but I guess I'd better not be a tight wad and order it.
Thanks so much for all of your help.
Alice

Hi Alice - till one of the map experts come along with something better, try this - Sikeside seems to be near Coatbridge. It's not the best map in the world, but it might give you a clue :

Sorry don't know how to do the fancy link thing, but cut & paste should work.
Best wishes

Hi Alice,
I'm not good with maps and don't see Sikeside mentioned anywhere, but I do know that Sikeside is over by Old Monkland Cemetry (I think at the top of the hill as you come in by the Woodside entrance). It was about 40 years ago, but I remember being at the cemetry then walking across the street to visit my Aunt and Uncle who lived in the "new flats" at the time. Maybe this will help you pinpoint the location until the real experts come along.
Regards,
AnneH

Hi Alice,
The only old map that I have found online that shows Sikeside is at www.old-maps.co.uk then input the co-ordinates 275040,663890 check the co-ordinate maker, then search.
For the current Ordnance Survey map, go to www.streetmap.co.uk and input the co-ordiantes 275040,663890 check the OS grid (x,y) marker, then search.
All the best,
Andrew Paterson
