Anyone like a real mystery?.....

Post by bluerowan » Tue May 09, 2006 5:15 am

Hi All

I sent away for the OPR Marriage of my Gt Gt Grandfather William Niven. It only told me his name, his occupation, his wife's name (Margaret McAdam)and the date of their marriage. So, I got his DC which I needed help deciphering (thanks again guys) in the vain hope it wasn't McIntyre but it was. :?

I can find no BC for William anywhere. The census says he was born in Lanark c1825 +/- 3yrs nor can I find a MC for his parents William & Isabella McIntyre.

Margaret & William were married in Dunoon. Why would they do this when one came from Renfrew the other Lanark? I checked out the other Nivens in Dunoon and can find no connection.

Does anyone have any ideas how to attack this while I still have some hair left?

Hi Bluerowan

It looks like William Junior was in the same line of business as his father.
Horse and cart type transport. His father was a contractor so was more than just a driver of carts, perhaps employing other men. If his son went up-market a little and had carriages (Hackney type) he may have been the black cab taxi service of his day?

Have you looked at a Glasgow/Lanarkshire trades directory for around the 1870's?

Why William married in Dunoon? There are some big houses and estates round there and in those days they needed a coachman. Possible answer!!!

Doing a parent search for
William Niven & Margaret McAdam

comes up with:

MARGARET NIVEN - Birth: 14 APR 1850
Christening: 23 MAY 1850 Dunoon And Kilmun, Argyll,

JESSIE NIVEN - Birth: 05 JAN 1852
Christening: 02 FEB 1852 Dunoon And Kilmun, Argyll,

ISABELLA NIVEN - Birth: 10 FEB 1854
Christening: 02 MAR 1854 Dunoon And Kilmun, Argyll,

WILLIAM NIVEN - Birth: 31 MAY 1856 Dunoon And Kilmun, Argyll,

ELIZABETH NIVEN - Birth: 21 JUL 1858 Clyde, Glasgow, Lanark,

JAMES NIVEN - Birth: 25 FEB 1862 Clyde, Glasgow, Lanark,

ANDREW NIVEN - Birth: 18 OCT 1865 Clyde, Glasgow, Lanark,

HELEN GILLIGAN NIVEN - Birth: 03 OCT 1870 Clyde, Glasgow, Lanark,

So assuming that they are the correct family [ born to one couple of those names] then he clearing was working in the Dunoon district.
Have you found them in the 1851 census? that would give you a clearer idea of what he was doing them and manybe theaddress would shed some light - if , as Russell sugested hewas working for an estate .

Thanks Russell

What you said makes sense.

I know being the eldest, my gran thought she was going to inherit the family business but her brother burnt all the necessary paperwork when her dad died. Infact the story goes that he was asked to do the house clearance as my Gran was too upset ..... well, there was a scramble at the Midden that day. He flung out silverware , jewellery, furniture, burned family photos & paperwork

Gee its so tragic its almost laughable.

Do I need to go to the Mitchell Library for that?

Hi WilmaM

A big Thanks.

Sorry, All my Fault (Owe you a drink at the Outside Inn).....I'm trying to go in the other direction. What you found is the sum of what I've got plus their MC and William's DC. I've been hoping for a living Niven to appear but no such luck!

My grandmother worked for a big house in Park Circus, Glasgow and met my grandfather in Dunoon when the family she worked for decamped to their other big house in Dunoon for the summer. Even the toffs went doon the watter. That was the last quarter of the 1800's
