Deciphering Place Name .....

Post by Ealasaid » Thu Jun 15, 2006 5:48 am

Trying to read the place name on an OPR baptism - it appears to me to be Westercrargie but I'm not finding this in any Internet searches (gazetteers, etc.) and I am unfamiliar with Scottish place names.

Any suggestions? I have tried many variations, undoubtedly I'm missing the obvious :?
The baptism took place in the Belhelvie Parish, Aberdeenshire County.

Thank you,
Ealasaid

Hi Ealasaid,

Westercraigie Croft can be found on the 1890s parish map in Belhelvie Parish.

http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/ea ... _list.html
Select sheet 77 - Aberdeen
Belhelvie is the blue coloured parish just above the centre of the map.
Click a few times on the north-west corner of that map until you can read the place names.
Just east of where the boundary of Udny (geen) and New Machar (pink) parishes meets Belhelvie is Westercraigie Croft.

Also just over the parish boundary into New Machar is Hillhead of Westercraigie.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Ealasaid,

Log on to: old-maps.co.uk

1) Choose Co-ordinate.
2) Enter 391538,819658 (the comma is important) in the panel.
3) Click Search.

Wester Craigie (a farm) is shown in the middle of the 1870 map.

If you click '2' at the foot of the map, you'll get an enlarged view.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any problem
with the above, and I'll photo-copy it for you.

Bervonian.

Hi Bervonian and AndrewP,

Wow! Thank you so very much for finding those maps for me! I was able to find the maps and locations with your clear instructions and have bookmarked both sites for future use.
Thank you again for your help!
