It's that Girtridge problem again! .....

Post by emanday » Mon Jul 24, 2006 12:59 pm

Back at the beginning of June I asked for, and got, help with this family.

See post; viewtopic.php?t=5052

Since then I have tried every which way to trace the marriage of James and Margaret on 13/6/1851 with absolutely no success. However, using the 1841, 1851, etc... censuses I think I have established that Margaret's father was probably Thomas and her mother was Mary. On one census Thomas is either dead or not at home as Mary is shown as Head with an occupation that looks like ?Shoemaker?. I might upload that one for other eyes to look at as there is another shoemaker on the other page and it looks very similar. (I wish these enumerators dipped their pens a bit more often - did they pay for their own ink  )

My endeavours have also revealed such a variation in spelling of Margaret's surname; apart from the Girtridge I've also got (so far  )...

Girthrick, Girthrig, Girthrigg, Girtrig, Girtrigg, Gerthrigg and Gutridge

McDonald or MacDonald (some couldn't make up their mind!), Bonner, Crichton, McKillop, Campbell, Cameron, Gitrig (+other spellings), Clark, Sloan, Stewart, McCutcheon, Ireland (the surname)

Hi Mary

Hope you're still making progress? I'm sure you must be cross-eyed with all the spelling variations of Girtridge. Can I add another couple (apologies if you've already considered them!)?

Thinking about the accents people have I wonder if you've searched using a C or K at the beginning instead of G?? You probably have, but your post has been lingering away for a few weeks now ....

Cheers!

Thanks for the suggestion about the C or K. I'll give that a try.

I'd also been having terrible trouble finding my grandmother's BC, then one day it simply was THERE!! Recognised her right away because on the BC her middle name was Girtrig, for HER grandmother.

I'll have another look for James and Margaret's MC using your suggestion.

Just had to update you on this name.

Recently found a reference to a Girtrig Mill in Ayrshire. Quick visit to Old Maps and got a bit of a surprise!

There is a Girtrig Mill, what appears to be a House named Girtrig with a road running right to the mill and there is also a Girtrig Mound on what appears to be the land belonging to this residence.

Now I'm beginning to wonder if my Girtrig/Girtridge lot took their name from the place? A modern map actually has a place called Girtridge in exactly the same location!

Did my rellies found a place? \:D/ Wee \:D/ Hee \:D/

Hi mary

This looks like a case of 'visit the Sassines'

Whether they were named after the place or vice-versa there must be some element of land/property ownership that would be worth investigating.

If you come up in the New Year it looks like you'll need to bring your thermos flask and lunch box.

Working on: Oman, Brock, Miller/Millar, in Caithness.
Roan/Rowan, Hastings, Sharp, Lapraik in Ayr & Kirkcudbrightshire.
Johnston, Reside, Lyle all over the place !
McGilvray(spelt 26 different ways)
Watson, Morton, Anderson, Tawse, in Kilrenny

It's things like that keep us going. You think you've got as far as you can go, then another chink appears in the wall, and you're off on another trail. S'wunnerful :D

And it's not my birthday till January!

You''ll have to take an aspirin and lie down in a darkened room at this rate.

I may have to join you re my Smiths on the other thread

Or perhaps we should pop a bottle or two
