OPRS .....

Post by boland » Sat Aug 19, 2006 11:59 pm

Hello,

Have been searching the OPRS on SP for a while you would think Id find something. All my family show up on the statuory BMDs apart from those born before or on 1855.My line also appears in all the census returns for 1841 to 1901. Why is it i cant find on OPR's given they were Roman catholic .

Any theories on this?

Their religion is the reason you have been unable to find them most likely. The OPRs consisted of records by the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. For Roman Catholic records you'd have to look elsewhere. I'm not sure where you would start looking for those records. Possibly you'd need to know which church they attended and whether that church has retained those records. From memory I think some Roman Catholic records predating 1855 are held at NAS.

Thankyou for clarifying that, that explains why ive never found them.Ido know the parish where they worshipped, they hold records only from 1855. The mother church holds before 1855.I did e-mail them although they said they would research when convenient. Got the feeling weren't going to be very helpful. Just wondered if another avenue of research

Have got a marriage date and place for Ireland but with the fourcourts fire of 1922 chances are slim.

Thankyou

My wife is a McCann and they too were from Ireland- also catholic. They moved over here around the 1870s-1880s. At one point I did embark on trying to trace their family back to Ireland but I gave up pretty early.

I had a look on the NAS site. They have a link to the following site which I haven't had time to have a good look through but may be of some help:
