Hi,
I'm Kaye & this is the 1st time I've used this -- or any other - forum, so if I make any gaffes - please excuse my ignorance.
Having a bit of bother tracing this ancestor. His descendants lived in Cramond for the next 3 generations - he married Ann Angus there in july 1768 and her family had lived there for3 generations. however, I can't find any trace of his birth in Cramond - the only McAra's of the correct age range I can find are from Monzie, which I believe is near Blair Atholl in Perthshire. If he is the same man, he came from a family of 8 children.
My querie is -- is it likely that John McAra moved from Monzie to Cramond in this era - to find work or whatever? Can anyone make an educated guess for me? Was there movement looking for work etc at this distance at this time - I realise it was only 20 years after the Jacobite rebellion, with its consequent upheavals.
Thanks for any help
Kaye

Hi Kaye,
Welcome to Talking Scot!
I'm sure you'll be glad you took the plunge!
I had a wee look in the British Vital Records for your John but unfortunately the first John is John and Ann's 1st child, John McAra on 11 Mar 1775.
I found an Alexander McAra born in Crammond on 10th September 1760 to Archibald McAra and Helen Stuart - any relation?
Sorry I'm not much help but I'm sure it won't be long till someone puts forward some good suggestions.
Anne
