i have found jane laurie nee scott on the 1851 census at hobkirk, roxburghshire aged 81 years.
she would have been born circa 1769.
on the IGI i found a birth entry for jane scott , father john scott but no name given for her mother.
if i ordered the OPR for her could someone tell me if it would give me her mothers name or not.
regards
margmo

Hi Margmo
Actual images from the OPR are supposed to be on-line from SP before the end of this year so it might be worth waiting for a while so you can see for yourself exactly what they do say or visit your nearest LDS centre and order in the filmed copies for the parish. In terms of cost that would be the most economic route.
I doubt that the mothers name would appear at all insome of the OPR entries.
Most times the entry might say "Elizabeth -lawful daughter of John Begg of this parish"
If you are luckier and your relatives were quite prosperous, it might add John Begg - merchant.
Some records will include the mother's fore name and the real lucky dip ones actually mention her full name.
Before you take the plunge try to identify whether the surname and fore name of the father is common in that parish.( I generally use IGI for that)
If there are too many John Scotts there is no guarantee that you will have found the correct one.
We found that listing all children in that parish born to someone of that particular name gave us a long list of children which we could place in birth order and eliminate some because their birth/christening dates were too close. Using the naming patterns of the following generations we were able to separate them out into different lists and subsequent graveyard searches for MIs helped confirm this. We had lists of probables and possibles up to that point.
To get back to your original question its a case of how much of a risk are you prepared to take.

Re: mothers name
Unlikely. Usually the IGI has the parents' names if they appear on the OPR.margmo wrote:on the IGI i found a birth entry for jane scott , father john scott but no name given for her mother.

All the best,

i have been very fortunate in tracking down my laurie / lawrie side & have this information you posted.
not contented i decided to dig deeper & find out a bit more about jean scott, wife of robert laurie.
unfortunately i may have hit a brick wall . she must have died before 1855 as i found no record of her death on SP.
thanks again
