Seeking info on John Spence c.1800 and his Linthigow and his parents Robert Spence (Leather Merchant) and wife Mary (suname Unknown).

Any Help will be greatly appreciated.

It was from John Spence's death cert that I got the info about his parents the was no maisen name for the mother on the cert.

There is a birth on the IGI for John SPENCE b 29 sep 1801 Linlithgow. Parents are Robert SPENCE and Euphen MARSHELL(extracted entry). Perhaps the informant on the dc got the mothers name wrong. There also seems to be a few other children for this couple when you do a parent search.

Is there a chance that Mary was not her given name, and that she was only known by this name for reasons hidden in the deep dark past.

As Karen said there is a John Spencer born to a Robert Spence and Euphan Marshell in 1801 in Linlithgow. There are also 13 children born to this pair doing a parent search.

Who was the informant on John's DC? Was he a sibling or someone else. They might not have known her proper name and only heard her called Mary during their life.

Just a thought.

Thanks for your reply it could be a possibilty the informent on John's death cert was one of his sons. Maybe it was her middle name you never can tell. I will have to look at this entry on the IGI and see all these kids.

Hi Heather,
This isn't really helping as such with your John SPENCE.
Karen and Stewie could well be right - mother's forename as Mary on his DC being a mistake, or just a guess.
Seems informant son didn't know very much - not even his granny's maiden surname.
And errors etc. are, as you know, not uncommon - in fact they occur all too often!
I take it that John always gave Linlithgow as his birthplace on censuses?
With ages consistent for being born there about 1800?

These 3 men (ages from 1841 census) could well be some of the sons of Robert SPENCE & Euphan MARSHALL.
[i've only used these 3 gents because they are in Linlithgow 1841 - and two are still there in 1851]

Alexander 45, shoemaker (b.1795)
William 35, surgeon (b.1803)
Edward 35, boot & shoe maker (b.1805)
-
Hopefully they all survive to 1855, and that their DCs can be found.
(also maybe look for the Euphemia Spence who married Alexander Wilson in 1830)

This to see if their parents are Robert & Euphan and, importantly, that their father's occupation is the same as on John's DC.
Even if the occupation agrees, then there is still no guarantee that John IS their brother.
But it would certainly increase the possibilty that he was.
